India Awakens

"A moment comes which comes rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when the soul of a nation long Indian war of independencesuppressed, finds utterance. We end today a period of ill fortune and India discovers herself again." The quoted words from Jawaharlal Nehru's speech on the Independence Day in 1947 throws light on the sufferings faced by India in order to emerge as an independent nation from the tyranny of the British rule.

Time has taken a swift flight since independence and India has managed to free herself from the shackles of the British impact as a result of the age long reign of the English, but the pangs of the Struggle is still felt deep down in every Indian heart.

India's First War of Independence, termed Sepoy Mutiny by the British was an attempt to unite India against the invading British and to restore power to the Moguls. The resistance disintegrated primarily due to lack of leadership against the huge troop of the British army. It was a remarkable event in Indian history and marked the end of the Mogul empire. It sealed India's fate as a British colony for the next hundred years and India came under the direct control of the British rule.

But this was the beginning of the endless protests. Owing to the various supressive Indian independenceconsequences of civil liberties, political rights, and culture as well as alienation from issues facing common Indians - led to an upsurge in the minds of the several indians who aimed and united together with the common goal of overthrowing British authority.

The whole of India committing itself to the attainment of Purna Swaraj headed forward and the widespread revolutions and mutiny led to the final attainment of the Indian Independence on 15th August 1947, but at the expense of the partition of the country into India and Pakistan.

The trials and tribulations that the Indians had to encounter to secure a liberated India led to the commencement of various movements by aspiring citizens. The prime among them worth mentioning are the Brahma Samaj founded by Raja Ram Mohan Roy .The Arya Samaj by Swami Dayananda Saraswathi, The Theosophical Society by Annie Besant Mahathma Gandhi's Swadeshi Movement, The Sathyagraha against the Rowlatt Act, the Jalianwalabagh massacre and the Quit India Movement, not to forget the efforts of the giant literary figures like RabindranathTagore, Subramanya Bharathi, Sri Aurobindo and others who tried their hand in arousing and educating the civilians in every nook and corner of India in steering their attention towards National emancipation.

At stroke of midnight, on 15 August 1947, India became an independent nation. This was preceded by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru's famous speech titled 'Tryst with Destiny.'

"At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age Independence movementends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance..... We end today a period of ill fortune, and India discovers herself again."

If we are unable to quote our first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's speech in verbatim, the gist of comprehending this speech can surely ignite a strong passion of patriotism. Not many of us, young Indians have ever bothered brushing up on our old, dusty pages on books of Indian history, for their lies a world so different from modern India soaked with unspoken figures of deaths of innumerable Indians who died for our sake in the hands of our oppressors so that we can lead the plush, comfortable lives of luxury that we are now living. However, not many of us even realize that our country, India, is the greatest model to world and the first country ever to win independence through non-violence under the able leadership of the charismatic leader of the time, Mahatma Gandhiji.

Our Indian history like our vibrant culture of so many diversities in terms of religion, culture and traditional values can be a large canvass to depict our origins, which has provided accommodation to change like no other country in this world. No country in the world can boast of such a cultural amalgamation.

The Day of Indian Independence is a day of celebration for every Indian to commemorate our jubilant victory over the British who ruled our country for nearly three centuries. It is to this success that every Indian stands up, chin held up with pride and salutes one another Jai Hind to mark 59th anniversary of Indian victory.
