Fact Check: Did Sunny Leone Take a Holy Dip at Mahakumbh to Wash Away Her Sins?

The Mahakumbh Mela is being held in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, after 144 years. The 44-day grand religious gathering will conclude on Maha Shivaratri, February 26. So far, the turnout has exceeded expectations, with over 55 crore devotees visiting the mela, surpassing the anticipated 40 crore. With another week remaining, the total number of visitors could exceed 60 crore.

Amidst the massive religious congregation, several misleading videos have surfaced on social media. One such video featuring actress Sunny Leone has gone viral, in which she appears to be filming at a riverbank. Some social media users are sharing this video, falsely claiming that the actress participated in the Mahakumbh Mela and took a holy dip to cleanse her sins.

A Facebook user shared the video with the caption, "Sunny Leone washed away all her sins by taking a bath at the Maha Kumbh Mela."

Upon investigation by OneIndia, it was found that the viral claim is false. The video in question is not from the ongoing Mahakumbh Mela but dates back to 2023.

To verify the authenticity of the viral clip, we conducted a reverse image search using a screenshot from the video. The search led us to multiple reports confirming that the footage is from Sunny Leone's visit to Varanasi in November 2023. According to ANI,, "Sunny Leone had visited Varanasi to promote a music album. During her visit, she sought blessings at the Kashi Vishwanath temple and attended the Ganga Aarti."

Further confirmation was found on YouTube, where TV9 Bharatvarsh had uploaded a news video on November 16, 2023, with the title, "Sunny Leone reaches Varanasi, participates in Ganga Aarti... Crowd gathers at the Ghat to see her."

The viral claim suggesting that Sunny Leone took a holy dip at the Mahakumbh Mela is false. The video is from her visit to Varanasi in 2023 and has no connection to the ongoing religious event in Prayagraj. Social media users are advised to verify facts before sharing misleading information.
