Fact Check: Did a massive Tsunami wave hit Turkey in the aftermath of the earthquake

New Delhi, Feb 07: Turkey and Syria have been hit by massive earthquakes in which over 5,000 deaths have been reported so far.

While rescue operations are on in full swing, many countries have already begun sending aid to Turkey and Syria. India announced that it is sending aid to both these nations.

Fact Check: Did a massive Tsunami wave hit Turkey in the aftermath of the earthquake

In the earthquake over 5,700 buildings have been destroyed and in Syria at last 1,444 people had been killed and over 3,500 reportedly injured.

Amidst all the ongoing developments, a video claiming it is from Turkey is being shared on the social media. The video shows massive waves hitting a beach and since it was shared it has gone viral on the social media.

Following the earthquakes, Italy had issued a Tsunami alert, but it was later withdrawn.

In the now viral video, water can be seen flowing towards a Mosque. Another video showed a portion of a multi-storey building collapsing with the claim that it is from Turkey.

"Huge building collapse in a aftershock after earthquake," alongside hashtags for "Turkey", Harish Deshmukh who is Zee Bihar Jharkhand's journalist said while sharing a video with the hashtags, "TurkiyeDeprem", and "Syria."

OneIndia has found that both videos are not from Turkey and they are old. In fact upon searching we learnt that the first video is from the Tsunami which hit Indonesia in 2018, while the second is of a scaffolding collapsing in Japan in 2016.

We found a video on YouTube posted by The Star on September 29 2018, which said that the video shows a Tsunami hitting Palu, which is a small city in Indonesia, following a 7.5 magnitude earthquake.

We also found a report from the Singapore-based CNA which spoke about the Tsunami.

In 2016 strong winds in Japan had led to the collapsing of a scaffolding in Japan. As per this report (https://scaffmag.com/2016/04/dramatic-video-captures-collapse-scaffolding-highrise-building/) from April 20 2016, the scaffolding over a nine-storey building collapsed in Tama, Western Tokyo Japan. The incident reportedly took place on April 17 2016 due to high-speed winds. The building was scheduled for demolition. However there were no injuries in this incident from Japan.

Hence it is clear that both the videos being shared with the claim that they are from the earthquake ravaged Turkey are being falsely shared. They are from Indonesia and Japan.
