Did You Receive PAN 2.0 Upgrade Alert Message? Is It Fake Or Real? Here's The Truth

The Income Tax Department has announced the launch of upgraded PAN cards, requiring individuals with older PAN cards to switch to the new version. However, this development has become a tool for fraudsters, who are exploiting the news to deceive unsuspecting users.

Reports have emerged of messages being sent in the name of the State Bank of India (SBI), claiming that users' accounts are deactivated due to outdated PAN cards. These messages urge users to update their PAN card details to reactivate their accounts. The fraudulent messages have sparked concern, with several people sharing screenshots of them on social media platforms.

The scam messages include a link directing recipients to download an APK file, supposedly to upgrade their PAN cards. Experts warn that downloading and installing such files could compromise sensitive data, granting fraudsters access to the victim's device. Notably, SBI and other banks have clarified that they never request customers to download APK files.

One of the messages reportedly reads,"Dear customer, due to your old PAN card, your SBI YONO account will be deactivated today. Your PAN card details need to be uploaded in the SBI YONO app. Please install the WBI APK now and verify whether your PAN details are correct."

In another instance, users reported receiving messages containing an attachment titled "YONO SBI Self PAN Update," further raising suspicions. Officials have confirmed that these messages are part of an elaborate scam aimed at extracting personal data.

Fraudsters are increasingly leveraging phishing links to trap victims. These malicious links, sent through platforms like Messenger, WhatsApp, or Telegram, appear genuine but redirect users to harmful downloads or sites. Clicking on these links often results in the installation of virus-laden files on the user's device, compromising its security.

Additionally, APK files have become a favorite tool for cybercriminals, as they allow full access to the victim's mobile device, enabling them to steal sensitive data.

How to Stay Safe

Authorities recommend users rely solely on official sources for updates regarding PAN cards or any financial details. For authentic information, users should visit the Income Tax Department's official website or their verified social media handles. Avoid interacting with unsolicited messages, particularly those requesting downloads or financial updates.

By exercising caution and verifying information, users can protect themselves from falling victim to such scams.
