Vijay Thalapathy’s Friend Jai Opens Up On Why He Embraced Islam And Considered Name Change
Tamil actor Jai was once viewed as one of the most promising young performers in the industry after delivering a string of memorable roles in the 2000s and early 2010s. Tragically, despite remaining active in cinema, his career gradually slowed down because of a series of underwhelming film choices that failed to leave a lasting impact at the box office or among audiences.

Jai's Film Career During The 2000s
Jai first came into the limelight after gaining attention for his appearance in director A. Venkatesh's Bagavathi (2002). He played the younger brother of actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay, popularly known as Vijay Thalapathy.
Following that breakthrough, he earned appreciation for his performances in films like Chennai 600028, Subramaniapuram, Vaamanan, Goa, Engaeyum Eppothum and Raja Rani. These films were enough to establish him as a talented performer, but not enough to sustain his success in the years that followed.
Is The News Of Jai's Conversion To Islam True?
During the early 2010s, rumours about Jai embracing Islam began circulating. Initially, he denied the speculation, but later publicly confirmed that he had indeed converted.
In a conversation with Vikatan in 2019, he said, "I have been following Islam for seven years. I developed an indescribable faith in Islam. At home, they are happy, saying, 'The child who wasn't worshipping any god is worshipping at least some god now.' Even though I converted, I haven't changed my name yet. I am considering whether to change my name to Aziz Jai."
Recently, the actor discussed the personal experiences that influenced his spiritual journey. In an interview with Galatta Plus, Jai explained that certain incidents at temples left him disappointed and emotionally distant. According to him, he experienced a sense of dignity and equality at mosques, which deeply affected his perspective.
Why Did He Choose To Convert?
Reflecting on his spiritual exploration over the years, Jai said, "I've worn mala for Sabarimala, and then for one year, I wore the Jesus rosary necklace and practised fasting. I followed all the gods, thinking everyone was okay. But at one point, I faced some insults in temples, unexpected situations that left me unsatisfied. Many such things kept happening."
No Relation Between His Spiritual Journey And Film Career
The actor further added that his decision to follow Islam came from personal conviction and had no connection with the decline of his film career.
Describing his first experience at a mosque, he said, "Then, when I went to a masjid once, I saw everyone standing in line and praying. It was my first time. Everyone knew I was an actor, but no one spoke to me inside the masjid. It was only after coming out that they spoke to me, and that too, very politely. No one asked for a photo. So, what I felt was, 'Is there some equality here? Do they see everyone as equal?' That struck me strongly."
