Vidaamuyarchi Review: A Decent Thriller Derailed By Slow Pacing

After much delay, Ajith Kumar's Tamil film Vidaamuyarchi has hit the screens on Thursday to a huge hype. Directed by Magizh Thirumeni, the film reunites Ajith with Trisha Krishnan and Arjun Sarja, a trio last seen together in the blockbuster Mankatha.

With music by Anirudh Ravichander and cinematography by Om Prakash, the film, which is a remake of the Hollywood film Breakdown, sets high expectations but delivers a mixed bag of highs and lows.

Vidaamuyarchi Review

Vidaamuyarchi Story

The story of Vidaamuyarchi revolves around Arjun (Ajith Kumar), a husband whose life takes a drastic turn following the abduction of his wife, Kayal (Trisha Krishnan). As he begins his mission to find her, Arjun uncovers a web of danger and deceit, with a dangerous group in Azerbaijan standing in his way. The narrative explores themes of love, resilience, and betrayal, but the execution falters, making the journey feel longer and more tedious than it should.

Vidaamuyarchi Review

Ajith comes up with a restrained performance, staying true to his character's emotional core. However, the script doesn't allow him to showcase his full range or star power. Well, this might disappoint his hardcore fans. His leading lady Trisha Krishnan, though limited in screen time, makes a strong impression. As always, Arjun Sarja as the antagonist brings his usual intensity to the role. The supporting cast, including Regina Cassandra and Arav, do their part adequately but don't get much room to shine.

Magizh Thirumeni has stuck to the plot and avoids unnecessary commercial elements, but his slow-paced narration hampers the film's impact. He takes his time to establish the story in the first half and the story gains momentum in the second half.

In short, the overall pacing feels uneven and this impacts the overall product. The film's stylistic visuals and decent production values are a plus, but they aren't enough to compensate for the lack of urgency in storytelling.

As far as the technical department is concerned, Anirudh Ravichander's music is okay at parts but fails to elevate the film as expected. The background score is just functional and also the songs don't leave a lasting impression. Om Prakash's cinematography is a major highlight, with some visually striking sequences, while NB Srikanth's editing could have been tighter to improve the pacing.

Verdict

Vidaamuyarchi is a strictly average action thriller with an interesting premise that loses its edge due to sluggish narration and uneven pacing. While the film has its moments, especially in the second half, it fails to capitalize on its potential. Ajith fans may find some enjoyment, but for the average viewer, it's a one-time watch at best.

Ajith-starrer is a decent attempt that falls short of being a memorable thriller. A tighter script and faster pacing could have made all the difference.
