Vettaiyan Movie Review: Rajinikanth Delivers Yet Another Mass Entertainer

Rajinikanth's much-anticipated Vettaiyan, directed by TJ Gnanavel of Jai Bhim fame, has hit the screens today. Produced by Lyca Productions, the film boasts a stellar cast, including Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan, reuniting with Rajinikanth after 33 years, alongside Fahadh Faasil, Rana Daggubati, Manju Warrier, and others.

Plot Overview: Athiyan (Rajinikanth), an encounter specialist, is unwavering in his pursuit of justice, even if it means bending moral boundaries. His life is upended when he crosses paths with Sharanya (Dushara Vijayan), a fearless schoolteacher who stands against injustice.

When Sharanya is tragically murdered, Athiyan is thrust into a web of mysteries. What follows next should be seen on-screen. The film raises pertinent questions about the morality of police encounters, and whether they are justified, while weaving in multiple characters to explore this theme.

Vettaiyan Movie Review

What Works: The first half of Vettaiyan is a superb mix of engaging investigation sequences and mass moments, particularly Rajinikanth's grand opening scene and his dynamic with Fahadh Faasil, which stands out as a highlight. The second half features some powerful emotional scenes and a thrilling mass fight sequence, further elevating the film.

Anirudh's background score plays a pivotal role in setting the tone, with two soulful unreleased tracks-Hunter Vantar and Mansilaayo-adding depth at just the right moments. The BGM is calm and subtle, blending seamlessly with the narrative, while still delivering the electrifying energy during Rajini's mass moments.

Drawbacks: The film does, however, suffer from some predictability and a few lags in the second half, which detract from its overall impact. Amitabh Bachchan's character, while significant, feels somewhat disconnected from the rest of the narrative, missing the emotional resonance expected from such a powerful presence.

Performances & Direction: Rajinikanth shines in his role, effortlessly transitioning between emotional depth and mass appeal. Fahadh Faasil's scenes with Rajinikanth are a treat to watch, adding weight to the story. TJ Gnanavel, known for his socially conscious narratives, once again delivers a message-driven film, tackling the ethics of justice and the consequences of unchecked corporate power.

Final Verdict: Vettaiyan is a neatly crafted, mass-class entertainer that will appeal to both Rajinikanth fans and general audiences alike. With a strong first half, impressive performances, and a compelling message, the film delivers despite a few shortcomings.
