Thudarum OTT Release: JioHotstar Acquires Digital Rights Of Mohanlal-Starrer For Lesser Price Than Empuraan
Mohanlal's latest flick, Thudarum, is proving that you don't always need flashy promotions to make noise as solid content speaks for itself. The film, which hit the screens on Friday, is off to a flying start, raking in ₹5 crore on Day 1 in Kerala alone. Early estimates suggest it held strong on Saturday with around ₹4.25 crore, showing that the audience is loving it.
Thudaram OTT Rights
Now, here's the interesting part-the OTT rights for Thudarum have been picked up by the same platform that shelled out record-breaking money for Empuraan (the Lucifer sequel). But unlike Empuraan, which reportedly fetched Rs 60 crore, Thudarum's deal came at a much lower price.

Why? Well, the OTT market for Mohanlal's films hasn't been at its peak lately. His last major hit was Neru (December 2023), and since then, the buzz around his digital rights had cooled off. Producer M. Renjith was initially in talks with JioHotstar during the whole Disney-Reliance merger chaos, but with streaming platforms playing hardball, the team had to shop around for better deals, according to a report in OTTPlay.
This even delayed Thudarum's release-originally planned for late January-before finally locking in a deal at a modest price compared to Lalettan's earlier films.
Bottom line? Thudarum might not have smashed OTT records like Empuraan, but with its strong box office start and smart deal-making, it's still a win.
Tharun Moorthy-directed movie has Shobana, Prakash Varma, Binu Pappu, Farhan Faasil, Irshad and others in the cast. The Malayalam flick has Shaji Kumar's cinematography, Nishadh Yusuf's editing and Jakes Bejoy's music.
Mohanlal Thanks Fans
In a post on C, Mohanlal said: I'm deeply moved and truly humbled by the love and heartfelt response for #Thudarum. Each message and every word of appreciation has touched me in ways I can't fully express.
Thank you for opening your hearts to this story, for seeing its soul, and for embracing it with such grace.
This gratitude is not mine alone. It belongs to every single person who walked this journey with me, giving their love, effort, and spirit to every frame."
He thanked Renjith M, Tharun Moorthy, KR Sunil, Shobhana, Binu Pappu, Prakash Varma, Shaji Kumar, Jakes Bejoy for the overall success of the movie.
He added that the Malayalam movie was made with care, with purpose, and above all, with truth. "To see it resonate so deeply is more than a reward. It is a true blessing," he concluded.
