'#Thalaivar171': Decoding The Formula Of Arriving At Working Titles In South Indian Cinema
For more than a decade now, South Indian cinema has embraced the practice of assigning working titles to films, rooted in the lead actor's name and their standing in the actor's filmography.
This has reshaped the way movies are anticipated and discussed among fans, and emerged as a powerful marketing tool, amplifying the star power and generating buzz long before the official title is revealed.

The formula for creating these working titles is simple yet effective: a hashtag followed by the nickname of the biggest star of the film, along with the number representing the film's place in the actor's career. This trend initially gained traction with Ajith Kumar's 50th film, which was affectionately dubbed 'Thala 50' before being officially titled 'Mankatha'. Since then, it has become a staple for the actor's subsequent movies, such as '#Thala53' becoming 'Arrambam' and '#AK57' for his 57th film.
Similarly, Vijay, another South Indian superstar, saw his films tagged with working titles like '#Vijay60' and his current movie was being referred to as '#Thalapathy68' till the name was formally announced as 'GOAT'. This practice, initially adopted by fans as placeholder titles, gained legitimacy when production houses and filmmakers embraced it. For instance, Vijay's earlier film under Sun Pictures was officially announced with the working title '#Thalapathy65'.
The amalgamation of hashtags, fan-made posters, and delayed title announcements has only fueled this trend, adding an extra layer of anticipation and marketing allure to film promotions. It provides filmmakers with an additional promotional tool alongside traditional marketing strategies like teaser releases and trailer launches, ensuring sustained excitement leading up to the film's release.
The latest example of this trend is Rajinikanth's 171st film, affectionately referred to as 'Thalaivar 171' by fans and industry insiders alike. Tamil cine-goers across the globe are now debating about this movie of the superstar using the hash tag - #Thalaivar171.
This working title not only pays homage to the iconic status of Rajinikanth but also serves as a testament to the enduring popularity of this practice in South Indian cinema.
Moreover, this trend has transcended regional boundaries, with Telugu and Kannada films also adopting similar working titles. For instance, Ram Charan and Shankar's collaboration is informally known as 'RC 15'. Given its success and impact, it wouldn't be surprising if Bollywood follows suit, embracing this innovative approach to film marketing.
