Who Will Be Sunjay Kapur's Successor & How Much of His Wealth Will Karisma Kapoor's Children Inherit?

Billionaire industrialist Sunjay Kapur, chairman of auto components giant Sona Comstar, died at the age of 57 on June 12 after suffering what medical reports describe as a rare anaphylactic shock, allegedly caused by accidentally swallowing a bee during a polo match in London. He was playing a polo match at the time of his death.

As his funeral was completed on Wednesday, attention has now turned to the future of Kapur's vast fortune. His current wife, model-actor Priya Sachdev, to whom he was married since 2017 and shares a young son Azarias with, is widely seen as the main heir. Hindustan Times reports that, under current inheritance laws, she stands to inherit the estate unless a will states otherwise.

What Is Sunjay Kapur's Net Worth?

According to a report in Bloomberg, Kapur played a key role in scaling his late father Dr. Surinder Kapur's business into a global enterprise. Since taking over the company in 2015, he helped Sona Comstar achieve a market capitalisation of ₹31,000 crore (approx. $4 billion). At the time of his death, Forbes estimated his personal wealth at $1.2 billion (₹10,300 crore).

Divorce Settlement With Karisma Kapoor

However, the situation is far from straightforward. Kapur was earlier married to Bollywood actor Karisma Kapoor, with whom he has two children, Samaira and Kiaan. According to an ANI report from 2016, Kapur had purchased bonds worth ₹14 crore each for both children and arranged for them to receive a monthly interest income of ₹10 lakh, as part of a legacy planning arrangement.

These provisions were in addition to the Supreme Court-mandated divorce settlement, which saw Karisma Kapoor gain full custody of the children and ownership of a Mumbai property previously held by the Kapur family.

While these financial arrangements were considered part of child support and post-divorce alimony, legal experts say they do not automatically equate to inheritance. Under the Hindu Succession Act of 1956, however, children are legally entitled to a share in their father's property, regardless of marital status-unless superseded by a valid will.

So far, there has been no public confirmation about the existence of a will. Sources familiar with the family, quoted by several media outlets, suggest that any such document, if it exists, has not been disclosed publicly.

Sunjay Kapur was also previously married to designer Nandita Mahtani in 1996. That marriage ended in divorce in 2000. With ties to the fashion, film, and business worlds, his passing has left a vacuum that spans multiple spheres.

Who Will Be Sunjay Kapur's Successor?

Meanwhile, speculation is rife about potential leadership changes at Sona Comstar. Some media reports hint that Kapur's sisters may be considered for executive roles, but no formal announcement has been made by the company yet. For now, both the corporate helm and the personal estate of the late tycoon remain in a state of limbo.
