Sidhu Moosewala Documentary: Why Is Punjabi Singer’s Father Angry Over BBC’s Release of 'The Killing Call'?

Sidhu Moosewala's much-talked-about documentary, The Killing Call, was released on YouTube by BBC in the early hours of June 11, just ahead of the slain singer's third birth anniversary. The release sparked controversy as Moosewala's father, Balkaur Singh, had earlier approached a Mansa court in Punjab seeking a stay on its release, citing lack of consent and ongoing legal proceedings.

BBC Releases The Killing Call Online Instead of Theatres

Originally scheduled for a theatrical release in Mumbai, the BBC World Service dropped the documentary quietly on YouTube. The release date notably preceded the scheduled court hearing on June 12. Despite the legal challenge, the BBC proceeded with its online release, drawing criticism from Moosewala's family and supporters.

What Is The Killing Call Documentary About?

The documentary traces the journey of Sidhu Moosewala - from his humble beginnings in rural Punjab to becoming an international Punjabi rap icon. It details his rise to fame, the controversies surrounding his public persona, and the events leading up to his tragic assassination on May 29, 2022.

The BBC describes it as a deep investigation into Moosewala's murder, including unseen footage, interviews with his family and close friends, and an audio interview with Goldy Brar - the Canada-based gangster who claimed responsibility for the killing. The documentary spans from Punjab to Canada, delving into issues of organised crime, diaspora identity, and political complexities.

"It's a story that takes us from the villages of rural India to the hip-hop scene of eastern Canada, from the turbulent history of Punjab to the contested politics of modern India," the official BBC description reads.

Why Sidhu Moosewala's Father Opposes the Documentary Release

Balkaur Singh, Sidhu Moosewala's father, has publicly condemned the documentary, alleging that it was released without the family's consent. He claims the film distorts facts and could potentially tarnish his son's legacy. Moreover, he fears that the screening may interfere with the ongoing criminal investigation and court proceedings.

"The matter is sub-judice in Mansa Court. We will now move the High Court," Balkaur Singh told reporters, adding that the release violates the family's right to privacy.

Legal and Public Reactions

The legal petition filed by Moosewala's father emphasized that the documentary could prejudice the ongoing murder trial and manipulate public perception. Despite the sensitive nature of the case, the BBC went ahead with the release, prompting backlash from fans and legal experts alike.

As of now, no ruling has been issued by the court, but the controversy surrounding The Killing Call continues to gain momentum.
