Ranveer Singh vs Farhan Akhtar Explained: How Don 3 Turned Into Bollywood’s Biggest Fallout

Ranveer Singh's exit from Don 3 has now rapidly escalated into one of Bollywood's biggest industry controversies, with the situation appearing to turn into a major face-off between actor Ranveer Singh and filmmaker Farhan Akhtar.

The speculation that initially revolved around Ranveer quietly walking away from the much-awaited franchise has now reached the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE).

Why Did FWICE Ban Ranveer Singh?

In a public conference, FWICE stated that it had taken "serious cognizance" of complaints filed against Ranveer Singh. According to reports, Ranveer exited Don 3 at the last moment even though the pre-production had already been completed.

On April 11, 2026, Farhan Akhtar reportedly filed a complaint, and the matter was first raised by the Indian Film and Television Directors' Association (IFTDA). FWICE conducted multiple meetings with Farhan and producer Ritesh Sidhwani. On May 25, the federation officially announced its decision to ban Ranveer from working on projects associated with the federation until the dispute is resolved.

What Does The Production House Have To Say About The Matter?

Excel Entertainment reportedly informed FWICE that it had suffered losses of nearly Rs 45 crore, which had been invested in the pre-production of Don 3.

The production house reportedly claimed that every major decision related to the film, including schedules, script discussions, planning and investments, had been finalised according to Ranveer Singh's availability. The actor had allegedly signed a three-film agreement.

Before the issue reached FWICE, reports also stated that senior producers from the Producers Guild of India had attempted to mediate the matter privately.

FWICE's View On Ranveer's Absence At The Meetings

FWICE claimed that Ranveer Singh did not appear personally before the federation despite being asked to explain his side.

On May 23, the actor's secretary reportedly emailed FWICE, offering to meet the body on behalf of Ranveer instead. During the press conference, FWICE Chief Advisor Ashoke Pandit referred to the matter as "very serious." He stated that it creates instability within the industry when actors exit projects at the last moment.

In August 2023, the journey of Don 3 began with massive buzz after Farhan Akhtar officially announced Ranveer Singh as the new Don, referring to it as "a new era." The iconic franchise was earlier led by Amitabh Bachchan and later Shah Rukh Khan.

Was Ranveer The Filmmaker's First Choice Or Just An Option?

Reportedly, before Ranveer was finalised for the lead role, Hrithik Roshan had been approached multiple times for the character.

Reports also claimed that Ranveer became upset after hearing that Farhan was considering replacing him with Hrithik Roshan. Farhan had previously revealed that Hrithik was offered the role of Don after Shah Rukh Khan. Hrithik had also made a cameo appearance in Don 2, which further fuelled fan theories about his possible entry into the franchise.

Farhan's Delay Regarding The Shoot

However, Don 3 has faced repeated delays. Farhan Akhtar had earlier stated in an interview that filming would begin in January 2025, but the shoot never commenced.

Months of silence surrounding the project eventually sparked rumours that Ranveer had walked out of the film.

Reports suggested that the actor was unhappy with the lack of a finalised script and the constant production delays. Another report claimed that the producers were hesitant about mounting such an expensive franchise on Ranveer Singh.

Meanwhile, Ranveer's spokesperson defended the actor, stating that he had consciously chosen to remain silent throughout the controversy.

According to the statement, Ranveer views the issue as a contractual matter better suited for legal resolution rather than public confrontation.

The statement further added, "He continues to hold deep respect and goodwill for all those involved and sincerely wishes the franchise continued success. Choosing restraint and grace in moments like these has always been a conscious decision on his part, and he will continue to maintain the same stance."

Many insiders believe that the release of Dhurandhar: The Revenge significantly impacted Ranveer Singh's professional priorities.

Nearly two years after the Don 3 announcement, the actor reportedly exited the film shortly after the success of Dhurandhar. Reports claimed that he had started leaning towards projects offering more creative control and newer genres.

One of the biggest films currently linked to him is Pralay, a zombie thriller that he is also reportedly producing himself.
