The Kannada film industry is mourning the sudden and tragic death of comedian and actor Rakesh Poojary, who passed away due to a massive heart attack in the early hours of May 12. Hailing from Udupi, he had built a solid foundation in theatre and television before breaking into films.

Rakesh Poojary Dies Hours After Filming for Kantara Prequel

Collapsed After Mehandi Function

According to reports, Rakesh had attended a mehandi ceremony at a friend's house in Miyar just hours before his death. Witnesses say he was in high spirits, even dancing and interacting with guests, when he suddenly complained, "I feel tired... I feel weak." Moments later, he collapsed.

He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, but despite medical efforts, he could not be revived. His close friend and fellow actor Govinde Gowda, popularly known as GG, later confirmed that Rakesh had a low platelet count and suffered a massive cardiac arrest. The Karkala Town Police have since registered an Unnatural Death Report (UDR).

Rakesh had reportedly wrapped up shooting for Kantara Chapter 1, the much-awaited prequel to Kantara, directed by and starring Rishab Shetty. Just days earlier, a junior artist tragically drowned while swimming in a river during a break. The film's makers clarified that the incident did not take place on set and extended their condolences to the deceased artist's family.

No Major Health Issues

Rakesh's sudden passing has come as a shock to many who knew him as a lively and healthy individual. He had no known history of major health concerns. Though he had recently survived a minor road accident, he had fully recovered and appeared to be in good health. Just days earlier, he was seen attending the premiere of the film Daskath, cheerful and energetic as always.

In a tragic coincidence, Rakesh's father had also died of a heart attack. With Rakesh being the sole breadwinner, his death is a devastating blow to his mother and sister, who survive him.

A Journey Rooted in Theatre

Rakesh's artistic journey began with the Chaitanya Kalavidaru theatre troupe in Udupi. His talent first caught public attention in 2014 through the Tulu reality show Kadale Bajil. Despite facing rejection at over 150 auditions, his persistence paid off when he joined the team of Comedy Khiladigalu Season 2 as a runner-up, later going on to win Season 3 in 2020.

This achievement catapulted him into the television limelight, where he became a household name thanks to his role in the popular Kannada serial Hitler Kalyana.

A Budding Film Career

Rakesh made steady progress in the film industry with roles in Kannada films like Pailwaan and Idu Enthaa Lokavayya, and in several well-received Tulu films such as Petkammi, Ammer Police, Pammanne the Great, Umil, and Illokkel. His versatility also shone through in coastal television reality shows like Bale Telipaale, May 22, Star, and Tuyinaaye Poye.

Final Rites

Rakesh's mortal remains are expected to arrive in his hometown Hoode, Udupi by noon today. Fans and the public have been invited to pay their final respects at the Hoode Ground, where his body will be kept for public viewing.

With his comic timing, grounded personality, and dedication to his craft, Rakesh Poojary had carved a space for himself in the hearts of audiences. His passing at such a young age has left a void in the Kannada entertainment industry. As fans prepare to say their final goodbyes, many remember not just the performer - but the vibrant human being he was.
