Poonam Pandey Exits Lav Kush Ramlila After Controversy

What was meant to be a headline-grabbing debut for Poonam Pandey in the Lav Kush Ramlila at Delhi's Red Fort has now turned into a controversy-laden exit. The actress, who was set to play Mandodari, wife of Ravana, will no longer be part of the production, following objections from political and religious groups, including the VHP and the BJP.

The Ramlila committee, led by Arjun Kumar and Subhash Goyal, explained that while Pandey had initially agreed to the role and approached them herself, the backlash could affect the festival's main goal of spreading the message of Lord Shri Ram. Earlier, the organisers had defended their decision, insisting, "An artist is an artist, and we won't replace her," but ultimately chose to step back amid public pressure.

Pandey had been enthusiastic about the role. In an Instagram post, she spoke of her excitement and devotion, mentioning she would fast during Navratri to spiritually prepare for portraying Mandodari. She was set to share the stage with Arya Babbar, reprising his role as Ravana, a character he has portrayed before and described as "the most colorful character ever created."

Yet, Pandey's controversial past loomed large. From the infamous 2011 World Cup promise to provocative stunts celebrating IPL victories, to launching an adult-content app and filing high-profile domestic violence complaints, her career has never been free of headlines. Even a fake death announcement in 2024 to raise awareness about cervical cancer stirred public uproar, though she later apologized.

With Pandey stepping aside, the Ramlila committee hopes to focus on tradition and devotion, keeping the festival's message at the forefront. Arya Babbar's portrayal of Ravana remains intact, promising audiences the familiar spectacle, while Pandey's next move in the public eye remains uncertain.
