Piyush Mishra: Bollywood Chases Crore Clubs Over Quality Cinema
Piyush Mishra, the 62-year-old poet, writer, actor and singer, adds yet another achievement to his illustrious career as he prepares to release his first music album. "Age has nothing to do with it. I'll keep working and never retire as long as I live," says Mishra.
Inspired by the by-lanes of Old Delhi and paying homage to legendary poet Mirza Ghalib, Mishra formed the Ballimaran band, a 15-member group he describes as "a human band." He explains, "Our music evokes feelings and provides comfort. These are not melodies meant to impress, but socio-political songs that make you think."

With an impressive array of performances in films like Maqbool, Gulaal, Gangs of Wasseypur and Tamasha, Mishra has earned critical acclaim. Reflecting on Bollywood's current state, he criticises the industry's obsession with box office numbers. "Unlike the Malayalam film industry, we lack innovation. Bollywood is more focused on which crore club it belongs to, instead of creating meaningful films," he remarks.

Having worked with filmmakers like Anurag Kashyap and Imtiaz Ali, Mishra praises Ali for the creative freedom he offers, saying, "His sets are structured, but he allows full liberty."

As his band 'Ballimaran' prepares for its nationwide tour "Udankhatola" in November, Mishra fondly recalls his time in Delhi, especially Mandi House. "Delhi and my days at the National School of Drama are what I cherish the most," he says.
