Operation Sindoor Film Faces Online Backlash: Netizens Blast Bollywood for Cashing in on National Emotions
As the Indian Armed Forces continue their resolute mission to avenge the chilling Pahalgam terror attack of April 22 - which left 27 innocent tourists dead - Bollywood is already racing to turn the tragedy and its aftermath into cinema. Over 20 film title applications have reportedly been filed, with names like Operation Sindoor and Mission Pahalgam topping the list.

According to reports, some of the industry's most notable names are in the fray. Production banners linked to actors and filmmakers such as John Abraham, Aditya Dhar, Mahaveer Jain, Ashoke Pandit, and Madhur Bhandarkar are among the applicants. Report also said that major studios like Zee Studios, Reliance Entertainment, JP Films, Bombay Show Studio, and Almighty Motion Picture have also entered the race to bag emotionally charged titles.
The proposed titles range from Operation Sindoor and Operation Sindoor Magnum to Pahalgam: The Horrific Terror, The Pahalgam Terror, and Sindoor Operation - reflecting a mix of dramatism and nationalism.
While most applicants are still vying for rights, the first official announcement has already arrived. Nicky Vicky Bhagnani Films and The Content Engineer have declared a new project titled Operation Sindoor. The film draws inspiration from India's retaliatory military response, which took place on the night of May 6-7. This precision strike targeted nine terrorist camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK), successfully neutralising multiple militants.
The name Sindoor carries layered meaning. In Hindu culture, sindoor (vermilion) is both a sacred symbol of marriage and a warrior's mark of courage. This symbolism is especially poignant in light of the Pahalgam attack, where several victims were newly married men reportedly singled out based on their religious identity.
The film's first poster has also stirred conversation. It shows a female soldier from behind, standing tall with a rifle slung over her shoulder, applying sindoor to her hairline - a blend of feminine strength and national pride. The backdrop is a war-scarred battlefield featuring tanks, barbed wire, and fighter jets, while the title Operation Sindoor is prominently displayed with one "O" artistically replaced by a smear of vermillion. The phrase "Bharat Mata Ki Jai" in tricolour further boosts the patriotic tone.
Directed by Uttam Maheshwari, the cast of the film remains under wraps. However, the creators promise a gripping and respectful tribute to the bravery of India's armed forces.
Backlash from Netizens: "Have Some Shame!"
However, the announcement has not been without controversy. As expected, netizens from across the country took to social media to express their outrage. Many blasted the filmmakers for what they saw as a blatant attempt to exploit the emotions of the public, especially during a time of heightened national tension and military retaliation.
"Have some shame! Don't milk our emotions," one netizen remarked while commenting on the poster. The backlash highlights a growing concern about the commercialisation of national tragedies for entertainment purposes, with many questioning whether it is appropriate to profit from such sensitive situations.
Interestingly, Jio Studios had also applied for a similar title on May 7 under Class 41 but later withdrew the request, citing an internal lapse. The studio clarified that the application was submitted by a junior employee without proper authorisation.
As India stands united in grief and pride, it appears Bollywood is gearing up to tell a tale that blends tragedy, valor, and unwavering patriotism - with Operation Sindoor at its heart. However, with controversy swirling around the commercialisation of such tragedies, the film's reception might be far from predictable.
