Marco OTT Release: CBFC Seeks Ban On Unni Mukundan's Malayalam Film - Find Out Why Here

The Regional Officer of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has sought a ban on Unni Mukundan's Marco claiming that the movie is unfit for viewing by families.

"Marco has already been certified A by the CBFC. Parents should exercise caution when allowing children to watch such films. The CBFC's role is limited to certification and does not involve censorship. We have rejected the satellite rights for the movie Marco as it's not suitable for a family audience," Manorama quoted Nadeem Thufali as saying.

The Malayalam movie was earlier cleared by the Central Board of Film Certification with 'A' certificate for its theatrical release. The movie, which hit the screens in December 2024, is directed by Haneef Adeni. It is about a gangster, the influential Adat family, who control Kerala's gold mafia.

The movie hit the OTT platform on February 14 on SonyLiv.

Why The Issue Of Violence Has Become A Topic Of Debate

On Monday, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had blamed the glorification of violence in cinema and television serials of having negative impact on young minds. He had named Aavesham starring Fahadh Faasil as one such example and said that the police mentioned in a report about youngsters had tried to befriend gangsters after watchig the said movie.

On the other hand, Marco lead Unni Mukundan had earlier defended the violence in the film, claiming that it was a reflection of reality. "Violence has been a part of human evolution. We have attained peace through wars. Above all, survival is our ultimate goal. I'm not saying it is an excuse to show violence on screen, but the fact remains that violence exists in our society. Marco doesn't even show ten percent of the violence present in our society," Galatta Plus quoted him as saying.

Regarding the controversy surrounding his movie, producer Shareef Muhammed said, "The intensity of violence will be reduced in my next film." He said that the Unni Mukundan-starrer was never made to promote violence.
