Mad Max: Furiosa Release Date 23 May; The Struggle Of Making A Mad Max Film

Mad Max: Furiosa is set to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on 15 May, with a release for Australian cinemas on 23 May. As the film is done and the crew is able to speak openly about it in interviews, many recall the struggle that it is to film a Mad Max movie.

In an article by The New York Times, George Miller recalled the many complications and roadblocks associated with making Fury Road. He had actually thought of the idea of Fury Road all the way back in the early 2000s, but couldn't start filming until the early 2010s.

There was also a lawsuit around the time of the film's release in 2015, as reported by IndieWire. Warner Bros., the distributors of Mad Max: Fury Road, had allegedly not paid the production company their dues, which led to Miller's company filing a lawsuit against the entertainment giant. Warner Bros. also filed a counter-lawsuit, claiming that the production company didn't deliver on the promises of making the film under budget.

One of the biggest hurdles of filming Fury Road, though, was the feud between the two main actors, Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron. In an interview with The Telegraph, George Miller talked about how the two had very clashing personalities and approaches to filming. "Tom has a damage to him but also a brilliance that comes with it, and whatever was going on with him at the time, he had to be coaxed out of his trailer." Miller reminisced. "Whereas Charlize was incredibly disciplined - a dancer by training, which told in the precision of her performance - and always the first one on set."

Despite everything the cast and crew had to go through, the movie still grossed around $379 million and was nominated for 10 different Oscar nominations, out of which the movie won 6.

Mad Max: Furiosa, a prequel movie set 15-20 years before the setting of Mad Max: Fury Road, has big shoes to fill. Though, it seems, its production also created its fair share of problems for its cast. Anya Taylor-Joy, the actress behind the main lead of the new film, recalled the intensity of the scenes and how isolated she felt on set in an interview with The New York Times. "I've never been more alone than making that movie," she said, choosing her words carefully. "I don't want to go too deep into it, but everything that I thought was going to be easy was hard."

The movie is action-packed in the literal sense. Anya-Taylor Joy would go months without speaking, as George Miller believed that dialogue only slowed down the film's pace. "[George Miller] had a very, very strict idea of what Furiosa's war face looked like," she said. "And that only allowed me my eyes for a large portion of the movie. It was very much 'mouth closed, no emotion, speak with your eyes.' That's it, that's all you have."

It really seems that the production of these Mad Max movies carries the same harsh conditions of the wastelands that they portray. Taylor may have been able to use those conditions to fuel her performance, but she has some big shoes to fill. Let's see if Furiosa will live up to the hype.
