Kingston Movie Review: What's Good, What's Bad In GV Prakash Kumar's Tamil Film? Find Out

Kingston Tamil Movie Review: Kingston, a Tamil-language fantasy horror film, marks the directorial debut of Kamal Prakash and is produced by G.V. Prakash Kumar, who also stars in the lead role.

The film, set in the fictional village of Thoovattur near Thoothukudi, weaves together elements of action, drama, and supernatural horror, creating an ambitious narrative that is both intriguing and, at times, convoluted.

Kingston Story

The film revolves around Kingston (G.V. Prakash). He is a smuggler and what happens when he realises the truth about his employer Thomas' drug trafficking forms the crux of the story. it all begins with the death of a young coast guard recruit, Benjamin. Once his girlfriend Divya (Divyabharathi), is abducted, the course of his life changes as he heads to the forbidden waters, which is believed to be cursed since 1982.

Kingston Review

Kingston is not your typical action-adventure or horror thriller. While it does have its share of supernatural elements, the core drama and the emotional weight of the story take center stage. The film delves into themes of redemption, justice, and the consequences of one's actions, making it more than just an adrenaline rush. However, the horror and thriller aspects might not satisfy those looking for a purely spine-chilling experience.

G.V. Prakash delivers a convincing performance as Kingston, showcasing his versatility in what is arguably his first full-fledged action role. His portrayal of a man grappling with moral dilemmas and supernatural forces is commendable. Divyabharathi, though in a limited role, is highly expressive and leaves a lasting impact. The supporting cast, including Elango Kumaravel and Sabumon Abdusamad, add depth to the narrative.

Technically, Kingston is a strong film. The visuals are exemplary, capturing the eerie atmosphere of the cursed waters and the rustic charm of Thoovattur. G.V. Prakash's music and background score are the lifelines of the film, particularly in the interval portion and the second half, elevating the tension and drama. The production value is impressive, making this a visually and aurally immersive experience. On the flipside, the movie struggles with clarity.

Verdict

Despite its flaws, Kingston is a commendable effort that deserves a theatrical watch. Kamal Prakash's directorial debut shows promise, and the film's strong performances, technical brilliance, and ambitious storytelling make it a worthwhile experience. While it may not fully deliver on its supernatural promises, it succeeds in keeping the audience intrigued with its dramatic core.
