K-Pop Fever Sweeps India:, EXO’s Suho, NTX and More Thrill Fans in a Cultural Explosion
K-pop boy band NTX received thunderous applause as they danced to the Hindi chartbuster "Tauba Tauba" at the Rang De Korea event in New Delhi. "Finally in India, I'm so excited," says Yun Hyeok, one of the members. He added, "I had no clue we had such a fan following in India," as he revealed being a fan of Indian superstar Shahrukh Khan. From loving Aamir Khan's Three Idiots to vibing with Naatu Naatu from RRR, visiting the Taj Mahal, and feasting on Indian curry and gulab jamuns, the octet had a long to-do list on their first trip to India.
Singer and actor Ha Min Woo, no stranger to India, having visited before, cherished the warmth from Indian fans. Ha Min Woo, a member of K-pop group ZE, has pursued solo activities and treated the audience to an unreleased track. "In a group, one's role is predefined, but as a solo artist, you manage everything yourself. It's a learning curve," he shared. Impressed by Indian film choreography, he expressed a desire to be part of it, adding with a laugh, "Getting the dance moves would be a challenge."

Rang De Korea, a prime cultural event organized by the Korean Culture Centre of India (KCCI), fosters cross-cultural exchange. Hwang Il Yong, KCCI's director, acknowledged the mainstream growth of Korean culture in India and the festival's role in providing fans an immersive experience.
Meanwhile, EXO's Suho and singer Hyolyn performed to packed audiences at the K-Wave festival in Mumbai and Bengaluru, delighting K-pop enthusiasts who had long waited to see their idols up close. This year, fans can look forward to even more excitement, with big names like GOT7's Bambam, EXO members Chen and Xiumin, and B.I (Kim Hanbin) set to perform at Mumbai's K Town festival, and SuperM's Lucas heading to Shillong for the Cherry Blossom festival.
Nikita Engheepi, co-founder of Pink Box Entertainment, reflects on the journey of bringing K-pop to India, starting in 2016. Her current roster includes stars like Kim Woojin, Suho, and Lucas. Engheepi explains the changing challenges in the industry: "Initially, we had to convince artists that India was a huge market, but now Korean agencies are keen to tap into it."
Shital Sikarwar, founder of TANI Events, is focused on building a community for K-pop in India. With an exciting lineup for their K Town festival this December, she recalls how India was seen as a rising destination at Seoul's recent MU Con. "India has the youngest community of K-pop fans," she noted. However, she also highlighted the challenges of gaining support from the Indian entertainment industry. "Indian artists are inaccessible to new players like us, even though some are fans of K-pop and eager to collaborate. Music, after all, is about connecting hearts."
With the exponential rise of K-pop's popularity in India, 2024 is shaping up to be a watershed year for K-pop fans, bringing a cultural exchange unlike any before.
