Jana Nayagan Release: Kannada Filmmaker Heads Censor Committee To Decide Fate of Vijay's Film Today
National Award winning Kannada filmmaker TS Nagabharana will head the censor board committee that will decide the fate of Vijay's much-delayed movie Jana Nayagan which stars actor-turned-politician Vijay.
Jana Nayagan has emerged as one of the most delayed releases in the superstar's career, following a prolonged certification dispute with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Originally slated for a theatrical release on 9 January, the film was withheld after the censor board raised concerns over certain scenes it deemed potentially sensitive to religious sentiments.

The certification impasse has since led to a series of legal and procedural developments. After the CBFC's initial objections, the filmmakers sought legal recourse, approaching both the Madras High Court and the Supreme Court of India. While the High Court reportedly granted relief, the Supreme Court subsequently intervened, effectively pausing the film's release until the matter could be reassessed through due process.
According to report in NDTV, the CBFC's revisiting committee is scheduled to review Jana Nayagan on 17 March in Chennai. The session will be chaired by noted Kannada filmmaker and CBFC board member TS Nagabharana.
TS Nagabharana is a renowned Indian film director and pioneer of parallel cinema in the Kannada film industry. He has directed over 36 films, earning 10 National Awards and 23 state awards, with eight films featured in Indian Panorama at international festivals.
Nagabharana straddles mainstream and art-house cinema, with successes like Grahana (1978), which won the Nargis Dutt Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration. Notable works include Banker Margayya (1983, National Award for Best Feature Film in Kannada), Chigurida Kanasu (2003, inspired Swades), Nagamandala (inspired Paheli), and Kallarali Hoovagi (2006, inspired Bajrangi Bhaijaan). He also directed blockbusters such as Janumada Jodi (1996) and contributed to TV, theatre, and Light & Sound shows for Indian tourism.
Coming back to Jana Nayagan, the review had initially been planned for 9 March but was postponed after a member of the panel fell ill.
The controversy traces back to December 2025, when the CBFC's examining committee first screened the film and recommended a set of cuts. The production team indicated that these changes were duly incorporated. However, the situation escalated when a member of the same committee later raised fresh objections in a formal communication to CBFC chairperson Prasoon Joshi, flagging specific sequences as problematic.
In response, the CBFC chief referred the matter to the revisiting committee, a higher panel tasked with resolving disputes or reconsidering contentious decisions. Industry sources suggest that the filmmakers have shown willingness to comply with the earlier recommendations, and there is cautious optimism that the revisiting committee may clear the film, albeit with additional edits if required. Once approved, the CBFC is expected to issue the necessary certification, paving the way for the producers to finalise a new release date.
Jana Nayagan features an ensemble cast including Mamitha Baiju, Bobby Deol, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Priyamani, Pooja Hegde and Narain. The project has also attracted attention due to speculation that it may be a remake of the 2023 Telugu film Bhagavanth Kesari, originally headlined by Nandamuri Balakrishna. While similarities in promotional material have fuelled such claims, the filmmakers have not officially confirmed the adaptation.
Technically, the film brings together a prominent creative team. The music is composed by Anirudh Ravichander, with cinematography by Sathyan Sooryan and editing by Pradeep E Ragav. The production is backed by KVN Productions, alongside co-producers Jagadish Palanisamy and Lohith NK.
With the revisiting committee's decision expected shortly, the fate of Jana Nayagan may finally be resolved, bringing clarity to what has been a prolonged and closely watched certification battle in Indian cinema.
