Imtiaz Ali And Deepika Padukone's Remarkable Collaborations
Imtiaz and Deepika have shared a long-standing creative bond, delivering memorable films like Love Aaj Kal and Tamasha. Their collaborations have often been appreciated by audiences for their emotional depth and strong storytelling.
However, a recent interview clip of the filmmaker talking about Deepika's role in Cocktail unexpectedly triggered controversy on social media.
Imtiaz Ali's Controversial Statement
During an interaction with media, the filmmaker recalled the casting process of Cocktail, directed by Homi Adajania. He revealed that Deepika was initially approached for the role of Meera, which was later played by Diana Penty. However, after speaking with Deepika, he realised that she would be better suited for the bold and free-spirited character of Veronica.
Explaining his decision further, Imtiaz mentioned that, at the time, the public image Deepika carried was very different from Veronica's personality.
He stated, "Veronica is so different from what Deepika's image was at that point in time. But since I had been in the room and attended parties with her, I know how crazy and wild she can be, even though she was otherwise projecting a very 'good girl' image at that time. Now people have seen through the facade. So, I thought it would be quite a new thing for Deepika to do," he had said.
Imtiaz Ali Clears The Air
Imtiaz took to Instagram Stories to personally address Deepika after facing backlash. In his note, he wrote, "My dearest and loveliest Deepika Padukone, you are my pal, my buddy, my safe option for humour. I think you will never misunderstand my attempts at fun because, more than anyone else, you know how much I love you, admire you, understand you, and appreciate you. But I have been told you might misunderstand and be hurt, so I am telling you, please don't."
The filmmaker further added, "To be mean to you is janam mein to possible nahin hai. I never thought I would write such a disclaimer to you, but it's been a while, and I didn't want to take a chance. Wish you the best and love always."
The clarification appeared to be an attempt by Imtiaz to put an end to the online criticism. Regardless of the controversy, the bond shared by the filmmaker and Deepika has long been viewed as one of the most admired actor-director collaborations in Bollywood.
