"I’ll Organise Some Trips Where I Take Time Off Here": Bill Gates on Slowing Down During India Visits

During his recent appearance on Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath's "WTF" podcast, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates discussed his frequent trips to India, the changing perception of tech billionaires, and his unusual views on parenting and wealth.

Kamath casually brought up how hurried Gates is typically when visiting India during the conversation. Gates stated that he hopes to find some downtime in the future, recognizing the hectic schedules. "I intend to travel to Assam next year. He remarked, "I might plan a few days just to unwind because I've heard it's gorgeous." He went on to say that this trip was one of his busiest because it included meetings with many innovators and different government ministries.

As the conversation turned to how tech executives' public personas are evolving, Kamath emphasized how people like Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, are changing their appearances to appear more approachable by substituting surfboards and family time for suits. Gates retorted that he believes it to be a true evolution rather than a calculated move. "Mark is a wonderful family man. He seems fairly normal to me. Dispelling the myth that tech giants are distant or unconnected, Gates stated, "He has a wonderful wife and he really cares about his kids."

The topic of Gates' widely debated views on inheritance and wealth was also brought up. In a previous interview with Raj Shamani's "Figuring Out" podcast, Gates reaffirmed his intention to leave his children less than 1% of his $162 billion fortune.

He clarified, "I don't think giving them vast wealth is a favor, even though they had a great education and upbringing." "Building a dynasty is not the goal here. I'm not requesting that they use Microsoft. I want them to be successful on their own.

Gates stressed that while his children's love and support are still his top priorities, he feels that most of his money should go toward helping those who are most in need. "It helps to avoid confusion if you explain your philosophy early on. They are aware of the love and support they receive, but the foundation is the best recipient of this wealth.

By discussing Gates' global work as well as the principles that guided his choices, the podcast episode provided a more intimate look at the man behind one of the most powerful people in the world.
