Diljit Dosanjh In Legal Spotlight: Ludhiana Concert Songs Accused Of Promoting Alcohol
Diljit Dosanjh's highly anticipated New Year's Eve concert in Ludhiana has landed the celebrated singer in legal trouble. The event, which marked the grand finale of his nationwide "Dil-Luminati India Tour," faced backlash after allegations surfaced regarding songs that promote alcohol.
Complaint Against Controversial Tracks

The controversy was sparked by Punditrao Dharenavar, an Assistant Professor from Chandigarh, who lodged a formal complaint. In response, Punjab's Deputy Director of the Women and Child Department issued a notice to the Ludhiana District Commissioner, urging a ban on specific tracks. The complaint targeted songs like 'Patiala Peg,' '5 Tara Theke,' and 'Case (Jeeb Vicho Feem Labbiya),' alleging that they glorify alcohol and negatively influence youth.
The move follows a precedent set by the Punjab and Haryana High Court's 2019 directive prohibiting songs promoting alcohol, drugs, or violence at public events. Despite previous advisories to Diljit Dosanjh, the singer reportedly continued performing the controversial songs, albeit with modified lyrics.
Raising Concerns Over Youth Impact
Dharenavar emphasized the damaging impact such songs can have, particularly on impressionable audiences, including underage children. He further criticized Dosanjh for performing these tracks while wearing a traditional pagadi (turban), stating it sends the wrong message about cultural values.
Concert Amidst Legal Scrutiny
The Ludhiana concert was a late addition to Dosanjh's tour, announced just days before on December 23. Despite the legal hurdles, the event sold out within minutes, drawing massive crowds. The singer's "Dil-Luminati India Tour" had already faced scrutiny in other cities, with similar complaints filed in Hyderabad and Indore.
In Hyderabad, Dosanjh received a legal notice from the state government over allegations of promoting violence and substance use in his songs. Meanwhile, in Indore, the singer addressed a separate controversy involving ticket black market sales, denying any involvement in inflated resale prices.
Dosanjh's Response to Criticism
Earlier in 2024, during a concert in Ahmedabad, Dosanjh commented on the criticism surrounding his lyrics. He promised to stop making songs about alcohol if India implemented a nationwide ban on liquor. "If all states declare themselves dry states, I promise I won't sing about alcohol ever again," he declared, drawing attention to the larger societal issue.
Success Amid Controversy
Despite the ongoing legal challenges, Diljit Dosanjh's "Dil-Luminati India Tour" has been a resounding success. The Ludhiana show concluded his three-month tour, which saw sold-out performances across the country. However, the legal disputes surrounding his music raise critical questions about the balance between artistic freedom and social responsibility.
As debates continue, the Ludhiana concert stands as a flashpoint in the broader conversation about the influence of popular culture on society.
