'Deadpool & Wolverine' Disney Allowed Film To Be R-Rated, Says Director Shawn Levy
In a recent interview with Fandango, director Shawn Levy and actors Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds talked about their upcoming movie, 'Deadpool & Wolverine', and how Disney allowed them to make an R-rated film.
In the interview, Levy talked about how he expected a lot of pushback from Disney regarding ideas he had for the film. But what he got in response was not something he expected. "Everytime Ryan and Hugh and I went in expecting pushback, we got support. From Kevin, from everyone at Disney. They trusted us and allowed us to do the version of 'Deadpool & Wolverine' that we feel is best."

Reynolds also commended Disney on this by saying, "It's a huge step for them. It adds a whole kaleidoscopic wheel that is that company and the different people that they have been entertaining forever." He also stated that the R-Rating is only going to be used for remaining faithful to their ideas and characters, not to just do R-rated content for the sake of doing R-rated content.
The latest movie where Hugh Jackman acted as Wolverine was 'Logan' from 2017. The latest movie in which Ryan Reynolds acted as Deadpool was 'Deadpool 2' in 2018. Both of these movies were R-Rated, produced by Marvel Entertainment, and distributed by 20th Century Fox.
Disney has always owned Marvel Entertainment, as it bought the company in 2009 for $4 billion. Marvel was still just a subsidiary company though. That was, until 2023, when Disney laid off Marvel Entertainment chairman Isaac 'Ike' Perlmutter and made it part of Disney's larger operations.
Disney is not new to creating R-rated films, though. In 1984, they created the production label 'Touchstone Pictures' whose films were produced and financed by Disney themselves. They would go on to make 'Down and Out in Beverly Hills' in 1986, their first ever R-rated film. Touchstone Pictures are also behind many other films geared towards adults, like 'Good Morning, Vietnam', 'Con Air', and 'Bringing Out the Dead'.
'Deadpool & Wolverine' is set to release in theatres on 26 July, 2024
