Certification For 'Emergency' Film Still Under Review: CBFC Tells High Court
The Punjab and Haryana High Court has dismissed a plea seeking to revoke the screening certificate of the film 'Emergency.' The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) informed the court that the film has not yet been cleared for public viewing.
Actor-politician Kangana Ranaut's upcoming political drama 'Emergency' has stirred controversy due to its sensitive subject matter. The Shiromani Akali Dal has even called for a ban, citing "misrepresentation" of the Sikh community.

CBFC's Assurance
"The certification of the movie is under consideration. It has not been granted as of now. It will be granted as per rules and regulations, as applicable in this case. If anyone has any grievance, the same can be sent to the board," Hindustan Times quoted additional solicitor general of India Satya Pal Jain, who appeared for the CBFC, as telling the court.
Jain stated that the CBFC considers all aspects and ensures that no religious or other group’s sentiments are hurt before issuing certificates to any film. This statement was made during a hearing on Saturday.
Petitioners' Concerns
The petition was filed by Mohali residents Gurinder Singh and Jagmohan Singh, who claimed to be baptised Sikhs and social workers. They demanded that the certificate granted by the CBFC be revoked and that eminent Sikh personalities review the film before its release.
The petitioners also requested that scenes allegedly "targeting the Sikh community through false and erroneous facts" be deleted. Additionally, they sought criminal cases against the filmmakers for allegedly tarnishing the Sikh community's image.
Film's Release Date
The movie, which explores a turbulent period during the national emergency in 1975, is scheduled for release on September 6. The high court bench comprising chief justice Sheel Nagu and justice Anil Kshetarpal disposed of the plea based on CBFC's statement.
A detailed order from the proceedings is still awaited. The controversy surrounding "Emergency" highlights ongoing tensions between filmmakers and various community groups over representation in media.
