The year 2024 was a poignant chapter for Indian cinema and the arts, as Bollywood and allied creative industries mourned the loss of several eminent personalities. From celebrated musicians to beloved actors, directors, and pioneers of parallel cinema, each loss left an indelible mark on the hearts of fans and the legacy of Indian culture.

This tragic year saw the departure of luminaries like Ustad Rashid Khan, a beacon of Hindustani classical music; Sreela Majumdar, a stalwart of Bengali cinema; and Padma Shri recipient Sadhu Meher, a trailblazer in Hindi and Odia films. Rising stars like Suhani Bhatnagar and cherished veterans such as Rituraj Singh also left us too soon, underscoring the fragility of life.

Bollywood Celebs Who Died In 2024

Ustad Rashid Khan, a celebrated classical singer and Padma Bhushan awardee, passed away on 9 January in Kolkata at 55 due to prostate cancer. His contributions to Hindustani classical music were immense, with memorable songs from films like "Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana" and "Jab We Met".

Sreela Majumdar, a veteran actress known for her work in Bengali cinema, died on 27 January at 65 after battling cancer for three years. She debuted in Mrinal Sen's "Parasuram" in 1979 and lent her voice to Aishwarya Rai in "Chokher Bali". Her passing left a significant void in the film industry.

Notable Losses in Indian Cinema

The film industry also bid farewell to Sadhu Meher, an acclaimed actor-director who passed away on 2 February at his Mumbai residence. At 84, he left behind a legacy of Hindi and Odia films and was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2017. His directorial work included the first children's sci-fi Odia movie, "Babula".

Suhani Bhatnagar, a promising young talent known for her role as a child artist in "Dangal", died unexpectedly at AIIMS New Delhi on 16 February. She was only 19 and suffered from dermatomyositis, a rare disease causing skin rash and muscle weakness.

Rituraj Singh's death on 19 February marked another significant loss for Bollywood. Known for his versatile roles in TV shows like "Hitler Didi" and films such as "Satyameva Jayate 2", he succumbed to cardiac arrest at 59 in Mumbai.

Ameen Sayani, the legendary radio host famous for "Binaca Geetmala", passed away on 20 February following a heart attack at age 91. His contribution to broadcasting remains unparalleled. Kumar Shahani, an influential filmmaker known for his work in India's parallel cinema movement, also left us this year.

Pankaj Udhas, the ghazal maestro who captivated audiences with songs like "Chitthi Aayi Hai", died on 26 February at age 72 due to prolonged illness. His soulful performances will be remembered fondly by fans worldwide.

Vikas Sethi, recognised for his supporting roles in popular TV shows like "Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi", passed away peacefully in his sleep on 8 September at Nashik. He was just 48 years old.

Comedian Atul Parchure's death on 14 October saddened many fans. Known for his comedic roles in films such as "Phir Hera Pheri" and "Judwaa 2", he died at age 57 in Mumbai. His humour brought joy to countless viewers over the years.

The fashion world lost Rohit Bal on November 1 when he succumbed to a heart attack at age 63 in Delhi. Renowned for designing both men's and women's wear since co-founding Orchid Oversea Pvt. Ltd., his creative vision influenced many aspiring designers.

This year has been particularly challenging for Indian cinema as it bids farewell to these remarkable individuals whose talents enriched our lives through their art and creativity.
