Akhil Vishwanath, Chola Fame Actor And State Award Winner, Dies By Suicide At 30

Malayalam cinema is mourning the untimely death of actor Akhil Vishwanath, best known for his acclaimed performance in Chola.

The 30-year-old actor, who was part of the 2019 Kerala State Film Award-winning film directed by Sanal Kumar Sasidharan, was found dead at his residence in Kerala on Thursday, December 11. His passing has sent shockwaves through the film fraternity and among those who knew him as a promising talent with a difficult personal journey.

Found Dead at Residence in Kerala

According to a report by Manorama Online, Akhil was found hanging inside his bedroom by his mother, Geetha, as she was preparing to leave for work. The incident has left his family and neighbours devastated, with many struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss of a young actor who was slowly carving his space in the industry.

The report also noted that Akhil was working as a mechanic at a mobile phone shop in Kottali, although he had reportedly not been attending work for some time.

Family Facing Prolonged Hardship

Akhil's death comes at a time when his family was already dealing with severe challenges. His father, Vishwanathan of Chunkal Chencherivalappil, is currently undergoing treatment for serious injuries sustained in a road accident. Three months ago, while working as an autorickshaw driver, his father was badly hurt after a car hit his scooter, leaving him bedridden and dependent on medical care.

Journey From Chola to Later Roles

Akhil rose to wider recognition with his performance as the male lead in Chola, a film that went on to win the Kerala State Film Award in 2019 and received strong critical acclaim. The role brought attention to his raw acting ability and raised expectations about his future in cinema. However, despite the recognition, his career did not take the turn many had anticipated.

He later appeared in films such as Operation Java, continuing to work steadily while largely staying away from the limelight that often follows award-winning performances.

Film Industry Expresses Shock

The news of Akhil's death was first made public by film worker Manoj Kumar, who shared a brief message expressing disbelief and grief. Director Sanal Kumar Sasidharan posted a heartfelt condolence note, reflecting on Akhil's life and struggles.

He wrote that Chola alone should have been enough to firmly establish Akhil as an actor, but circumstances did not allow that to happen. Sasidharan also mentioned that Akhil had recently been preparing for an upcoming OTT project, making the loss even more painful. Actor Joju George also paid his respects with a short message of condolence.
