70th National Film Awards 2024: How Many Awards Did South Indian Movies Win?
The 70th National Film Awards for 2022 have been announced, showcasing the achievements of various regional film industries. The Malayalam film industry won eight followed by the Tamil and Kannada industries securing seven awards each. However, the Telugu film industry bagged one.
Mani Ratnam's Tamil movie 'Ponniyin Selvan 1' won five awards, including the Best Tamil Film of 2022. AR Rahman won Best Music Director for his music.

Additionally, Anand Krishnamoorthy received the Best Sound Design Award, and Ravi Varman was honoured with the Best Cinematographer award.
Dhanush's 'Thiruchitrambalam' contributed to Kollywood's tally with two awards. Nithya Menon won Best Actress of 2022 for her role in this movie, and Jaani Master along with Sathish Krishnan received the award for Best Choreography for the song 'Megham Karukadha'.
Malayalam Industry Triumphs
The Malayalam film industry celebrated eight awards. 'Aattam' by Anand Ekarshi won Best Film and Best Screenplay. 'Saudi Vellakka' by Tharun Moorthy was named Best Malayalam Film.
Mahesh Bhuvanend earned Best Editing for 'Aattam', while Bombay Jayashri won Best Female Playback Singer for 'Chaayum Veyil' from 'Saudi Vellakka'.
Special Mention included Sanjoy Salil Chowdhury for his music in 'Kadhikan'. Sreepath was awarded Best Child Artist for 'Malikappuram', and Joshy Benedict's silent flick 'A Coconut Tree' won Best Animated Film.
Kannada Industry Highlights
The Kannada film industry also made its mark with seven awards. Rishab Shetty was named Best Actor, and Kantara was selected as the Best Feature Film providing wholesome entertainment. 'KGF Chapter 2' starring Yash won the National Film Award for Best Kannada Film. Anbumani and Arivumani were honoured with the Best Action Direction Award (Stunt Choreography).
Best Debut Film Of A Director for Basti Dinesh Shenoy for 'Madhyantara', while Suresh Urs bagged for Best Editing for 'Madhyantara'. Suneel Puranik won 'Ranga Vibhoga'.
Telugu Industry Recognition
The Telugu film industry secured one award at this year's ceremony. 'Karthikeya 2' was recognised as the Best Telugu Film.
In total, the South Indian movies bagged a total of 23 awards.
