With AIADMK Back In NDA, Will BJP Push Annamalai To Rajya Sabha?

With the Election Commission announcing Rajya Sabha elections for six seats from Tamil Nadu on June 19, all eyes are now on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the fate of its former state president, K Annamalai. His name, once floated as a possible nominee from Andhra Pradesh, is again making the rounds - this time in his home state of Tamil Nadu.

Will Annamalai Get AIADMK Backing?

Earlier this year, speculation was rife that Annamalai could be fielded for the lone Rajya Sabha seat from Andhra Pradesh. However, the BJP instead nominated veteran leader P Venkata Satyanarayana, who was elected unopposed.

With AIADMK Back In NDA Will BJP Push Annamalai To Rajya Sabha

Now, attention has shifted to Tamil Nadu, where the terms of six Rajya Sabha MPs - including representatives from the DMK, AIADMK, PMK, and MDMK - will end on July 24. With 234 members in the state Assembly, each Rajya Sabha candidate requires 34 votes to win.

The Number Game

The ruling INDIA bloc, led by the DMK, holds a comfortable majority with 158 MLAs (DMK: 133, Congress: 17, VCK: 4, CPI: 2, CPI-M: 2) - enough to secure four of the six seats. The NDA, comprising AIADMK (66), BJP (4), and PMK (5), has the numbers to claim the remaining two.

The question now is whether the BJP will push for a Rajya Sabha seat for Annamalai, especially after controversially replacing him as state party president earlier this year. His removal was widely interpreted as a move to placate the AIADMK, which had made his exit a condition for rejoining the NDA ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.

Annamalai, known for his aggressive political style and sharp attacks on the DMK regime, increased the state's visibility of the BJP. Under his leadership, the party briefly managed to project itself as a strong opposition voice. However, his confrontational stance - including comments on Dravidian icons like Annadurai and former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa - had drawn the ire of the AIADMK.

Now that the BJP and AIADMK are back under the NDA umbrella, the political calculus becomes delicate. Will the AIADMK, still smarting from Annamalai's past remarks, support a Rajya Sabha bid for him? Or will the BJP look elsewhere, keeping the alliance dynamics in mind?

With the nomination process expected to begin soon, the coming weeks could reveal whether the BJP rewards Annamalai with a national role in Parliament - or keeps him on the sidelines to preserve coalition harmony in Tamil Nadu.
