The Mettur Dam has reached its full capacity, while the water levels in most other dams remained largely unchanged on Friday. The Bhavanisagar and Sholayar dams experienced a slight increase in water levels.

At Mukkombu Dam, the water level from Mettur stood at 1,68,000 cusecs, with 43,874 cusecs released into the Cauvery River and 1,25,000 cusecs into the Kollidam River on Thursday. The inflow was 1.75 lakh cusecs, and the entire amount was released from the reservoir.

Tamil Nadu's extensive network of dams is crucial for managing the state's water resources. These engineering feats play a vital role in water supply, drinking water needs, and electricity production.

The state has 116 large dams, with 78 operated and maintained by the Tamil Nadu Water Resources Department (TNWRD). Iconic structures like the Mettur Dam on the Cauvery River and the Vaigai Dam at the foothills of the Western Ghats are essential lifelines for agriculture, power generation, and water supply.

Despite occasional disputes, the Mullaperiyar Dam remains pivotal to Tamil Nadu's water security. These dams regulate river flows, manage floods and droughts, and contribute significantly to the state's socio-economic development by facilitating irrigation, supplying drinking water, and generating hydropower.
