TVK Chief Vijay Video Calls Karur Stampede Victims’ Families; Promises To Meet In Person Soon

Actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader Vijay has personally offered condolences to several families who lost relatives in the recent Karur rally stampede that killed 41 people. The outreach occurred via video calls on Monday and Tuesday, party sources told The New Indian Express.

A TVK team, led by General Secretary Dr KG Arunraj, is on the ground visiting the bereaved families in areas like Gandhigramam and Pasupathipalayam, facilitating the calls with Vijay. "He said he would stand by our family like a brother," P. Selvaraj, a relative of one victim, told The New Indian Express.

During the calls, Vijay reportedly expressed deep sorrow, calling the tragedy an "irreparable loss." He assured the families of his support and mentioned plans for an in-person visit and further relief assistance. This follows his earlier announcement of a ₹20 lakh compensation for each victim's family.

So far, Vijay has spoken to the families of the victims. As per another report, each call reportedly lasted around 20 minutes.

"I am with you, I will stand by you," Vijay told one of the families as per India Today. However, there were instruction to the families not to record or take photos during the video call.

The outreach comes as the TVK faces scrutiny over the incident. While several party functionaries have been arrested, Vijay has not been named in any FIR. Last week, the Madras High Court criticized the party's "reckless conduct" and the leader's perceived failure to show remorse immediately following the tragedy.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court will hear on Friday a plea seeking a CBI investigation into the Karur stampede.Earlier, the Madras High Court had rejected a similar petition filed by BJP leader Uma Anandan, who demanded a central probe into the incident. The court also denied anticipatory bail to TVK district secretary N Sathish Kumar, one of the key organisers.
