The Rise And Fall Of Kakathope Balaji: Gangster Shot Dead In Police Encounter

In the early hours of today, Chennai witnessed the dramatic end of a notorious criminal saga as 'Kakathope' Balaji, a gangster on the run, was killed during a police 'encounter'. This operation took place in Vyasarpadi, where the police aimed to apprehend him. According to the police, the encounter ensued after Balaji attacked the officers, prompting them to respond with gunfire. Known for his extensive criminal record, Balaji had 59 cases against him, spanning murder, extortion, and other serious charges.

Born in the BRN Garden locality of Kakathope, Kondithope, which inspired his moniker, Balaji's life was steeped in crime from an early age. Following the death of his father, Ramalingam, when he was young, and with his mother, Kanmani, a retired housekeeping staff at the Government Royapettah Hospital, Balaji’s trajectory into the criminal world seemed almost inevitable. He dropped out of school after completing Class 10 at St Gabriel's School in Broadway and initially worked as a porter in Mannadi before venturing into the criminal underworld, according to a report in DTNext.

Balaji's criminal partnerships further solidified his notorious reputation. He allied with infamous rowdies like Nithya (also known as Nithyanandam) and Kalavetti Ravi, engaging in extortion activities primarily targeting lorry sheds. His violent streak resulted in multiple murders over the years, marking him as one of the city's most feared gangsters. The police records detail the brutality of these acts, underscoring the ruthlessness that characterized Balaji's rise in the criminal ranks.

The five murder cases that stand out in Balaji's criminal record illuminate the depth of his brutality. In 2005, he murdered Yuvraj in a clash over extortion in the Broadway area. Four years later, Sathish Kumar fell victim to Balaji over a dispute related to a parking tender. In 2011, he killed Saravanan, allegedly for being romantically involved with the sister of his associate Sudhakar. The following years saw the murders of Vijay, for killing his friend Babu's wife in 2011, and Venkatta, who was associated with his rival Kalavetti Ravi, both in 2013.

These incidents, recorded at various police stations across Chennai, showcase the violent legacy of 'Kakathope' Balaji. From disputes over extortion and tender allocations to personal vendettas, his criminal activities left a trail of violence and fear. The culmination of his criminal career in an early morning encounter brings a close to a chapter of organized crime in Chennai, highlighting the relentless effort of the police in curtailing the activities of notorious gangsters like Balaji. The city, while relieved at the end of his reign of terror, remains vigilant against the rise of similar figures in the underworld.
