Condemning the government's inaction, Vijay stated, "The recurrence of such incidents underscores the apathy of the government machinery, especially when the wounds from similar tragedies last year have yet to heal."

He urged the Tamil Nadu government to implement stringent preventive measures to avert such incidents in the future.

According to Kallakurichi district collector M S Prasanth, a total of 29 fatalities have been reported from the consumption of illicit 'packet arrack'. Prasanth also informed reporters that 109 individuals are currently receiving medical treatment, with the condition of some critically ill patients constantly changing. He assured that an ample number of medical professionals, including specialists from nearby government medical colleges, have been mobilized to address the situation. Additionally, more ambulances equipped with life-support systems have been deployed.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed his shock over the incident and announced the arrest of those involved in the crime. In a social media post, he wrote, "I was deeply saddened to learn about the tragic deaths of individuals who consumed adulterated liquor in Kallakurichi. Those responsible for this crime have been apprehended, and action has been taken against officials who failed to prevent it. Immediate action will be taken upon receiving information from the public about individuals engaged in such criminal activities. We will decisively suppress crimes that undermine our society."

This tragedy comes just a year after the loss of 22 lives in similar hooch disasters in Villupuram and Chengalpattu districts.
