TASMAC: Is It Dry Day In Chennai and Tamil Nadu On Aug 16 Over Krishna Janmasthami?

If you're planning a mid-August toast in Tamil Nadu, you might want to check your calendar. This year, August is serving up back-to-back big dates - first Independence Day on Friday, August 15, and then Krishna Janmashtami right after.

And whenever those two come in close succession, the same question pops up: Do TASMAC shops stay open, or do we brace for a double dry spell?

Independence Day is, of course, a sure-shot dry day here. It's one of Tamil Nadu's eight officially designated "no booze" dates, and every single TASMAC outlet across the state will be under lock and key.

Even tourists in Chennai or beachside holidaymakers in Mahabalipuram won't be able to snag a bottle that day. District Collectors have already told local managers to keep things watertight.

The real buzz this year, though, is about August 16 - Krishna Janmashtami. Social media rumours have been swirling about a possible ban on sales, hinting at a weekend without a sip. But officials have poured cold water on that talk, saying Janmashtami is a public holiday for offices, not for liquor stores.

So no extra "dry" signboards this time - only the Independence Day closure applies.
