Tamil Nadu Weather Update: Will It Rain In Chennai? KTCC Braces For Heavy Downpour
The KTCC region (Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu) is bracing for heavy rainfall over the next 3-4 days, according to weather updates.
Noted weather blogger R Pradeep John (popularly known as Tamil Nadu Weatherman) shared insights into the weather system's impact, emphasizing significant rains for Chennai and nearby districts.

Predictions for Rainfall
- KTCC Region: Rainfall is set to begin within hours and intensify from November 27, continuing through December 1. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected on some days.
- Delta and Coastal Districts: Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Mayiladuthurai, Ramanathapuram, Cuddalore, and Puducherry are expected to experience heavy showers.
- South Tamil Nadu: While rainfall might reach Ramanathapuram, the southernmost districts may see limited impact, depending on the depression's path.
Depression Near Tamil Nadu Coast
The weather system, a depression located south of Sri Lanka, is slowly moving north-northwest and is expected to linger near the Tamil Nadu coast until November 30 or December 1. While winds are not anticipated to pose a significant threat, persistent rains are a major concern.
Pradeep John also noted that the depression is unlikely to cross Sri Lanka due to geographical and meteorological factors, including the rugged terrain and subtropical ridge. However, northern and northeastern Sri Lanka may face extreme rainfall over the next two days.
The rains come as a welcome relief for Chennai, where water storage levels in key reservoirs-Poondi (15%), Chembarambakkam (59%), and Red Hills (71%)-have been low. John expressed optimism that this spell could replenish catchment areas, mitigating water concerns for 2025.
The blogger advised fishermen to heed government warnings, as the northern Tamil Nadu coast will experience rough seas over the next 4-5 days. Coastal communities are urged to remain vigilant and avoid venturing into the ocean.
As per the Regional Meterological Centre, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur districts, Villuppuram, Cuddalore, Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Sivaganga districts, Ramanathapuram, Tiruchirappalli, Perambalur, Kallakurichi and Chengalpattu districts are predicted to get heavy rains today.
The prolonged spell of rains is expected to bring much-needed relief to Tamil Nadu's reservoirs while presenting challenges for low-lying regions. Authorities and residents are advised to prepare for the sustained downpour.
