Tamil Nadu Weather Update: Which District Received Highest Rains On Dec 12?

Tamil Nadu witnessed one of its heaviest rainfalls in 2024 on Thursday, with over 30 districts receiving significant downpours. According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, Manalmedu in Mayiladuthurai district recorded the highest rainfall at 249 mm, followed by Tirunelveli at 203.5 mm.

Heavy rains drenched districts such as Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, and many more. Southern districts like Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, and Kanyakumari were also lashed with torrential rainfall, while Puducherry and Karaikal received significant showers.

Weather blogger R. Pradeep John highlighted the exceptional nature of this event, calling it "the heaviest day for Tamil Nadu monsoon in a long time." He noted that nearly every district experienced heavy rains, with standout figures including 500 mm in Manjolai la Oothu, over 300 mm in Mayiladuthurai-Cuddalore, and 350+ mm in Thoothukudi's Kovilpatti.

Courtallam witnessed historic water flows, and massive rains hit districts like Perambalur, Ariyalur, Dindigul, and Tenkasi, where Ayikudi recorded 300 mm. In the Chennai region, while the city experienced a temporary break from rains, inflows into reservoirs like Poondi Dam surged to nearly 13,000 cusecs, prompting increased water releases.

Looking ahead, the meteorological department has predicted heavy rainfall for districts including Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Theni, Madurai, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, and Ramanathapuram today. The rains are expected to bring much-needed relief but also pose challenges in terms of water management and flood control.

In view of rains, school and colleges have been declared holiday today in Tiruchi, Tirunelveli, Puducherry, Thanjavur, Villupuram, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, Ariyalur and Perambalur. Only Schools Karur, Theni, Sivagangai, Ramanathapuram, Virudhnagar, Salem, Pudukottai, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore, Madurai, Dindigul, Namakkal, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Dharmapuri and Tirupur.

However, in these districts only schools will remain closed: Karur, Theni, Sivagangai, Ramanathapuram, Virudhnagar, Salem, Pudukottai, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore, Madurai, Dindigul, Namakkal, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Dharmapuri and Tirupur.
