Tamil Nadu is witnessing a steady climb in mercury levels, with the latest report from the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) highlighting a significant warming trend across the region. On Sunday, the state saw a clear divide between the sweltering plains and the temperate hilly retreats, with 11 districts crossing the 35°C mark and a total of 24 stations registering temperatures above 30°C.

The Heat Leaders: Vellore and the Interior Districts
Vellore emerged as the hottest location in the state, recording a maximum temperature of 38.5°C, nearly 3.1°C above its seasonal normal. Close behind was Karur Paramathi at 38.0°C, followed by the industrial and agricultural hubs of Erode and Madurai AP, both recording 37.0°C.

The data indicates that the interior districts are bearing the brunt of the heat. Locations such as Salem (35.9°C), Dharmapuri (35.7°C), and Tiruchirappalli (35.7°C) all hovered well above the 35°C threshold. In contrast, the coastal regions remained slightly moderated by sea breezes, with Chennai City recording 32.3°C and Puducherry at 32.0°C.

Minimum Temperatures and Hill Stations
While the days are heating up, the nights offered some respite, particularly in the south. Madurai City recorded the lowest minimum temperature in the plains at 21.0°C. For those seeking a true escape from the heat, the hill stations remained cool; Kodaikanal recorded a minimum of 8.9°C, while Udagamandalam (Ooty) saw a maximum of 24.8°C-nearly 14 degrees cooler than Vellore.

The RMC bulletin suggests that the current "near normal" conditions are about to shift.

Day 1 to Day 3 (March 9-11): No large change is expected in maximum temperatures. Dry weather will continue to prevail across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.

Day 4 to Day 5 (March 12-13): Residents should prepare for a gradual rise of 2°C. Temperatures are likely to be above normal in isolated pockets during this period.

The minimum temperatures are expected to remain stable throughout the week, meaning nights will not necessarily get warmer, even as the daytime heat intensifies.
