Tamil Nadu Weather Update: TN Set For April Rains, To Get Relief From Heat

After weeks of scorching temperatures, Tamil Nadu is set to receive much-needed rainfall in early April, bringing respite from the oppressive heat. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, has issued a heavy rainfall alert for several districts, signaling a shift in weather patterns.

Tamil Nadu Weather Update

Vellore recently became the first city in Tamil Nadu this year to record a blistering 40°C, followed closely by Madurai. However, relief is on the horizon as weather systems prepare to bring thunderstorms and downpours across the state.

Rainfall Forecast for Key Districts

On April 2, heavy rain is expected in isolated areas of the Ghat regions in Coimbatore, as well as in Tenkasi, Virudhunagar, Theni, and Dindigul districts. The following day (April 3), light to moderate rain with thunderstorms is likely in parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. The Ghat areas of Coimbatore, Nilgiris, and Erode may experience heavy rainfall.

Humidity and Discomfort to Persist

Despite the rains, the RMC has warned that high humidity and warm temperatures will continue to cause discomfort in some regions. Meanwhile, meteorologists attribute the upcoming rains to wind discontinuity, a seasonal phenomenon that triggers thunderstorms on March 31.

Back-to-Back Rain Events Expected

As per a weather blogger, Tamil Nadu is bracing for two consecutive rainfall events in the first half of April. The first, driven by wind discontinuity and a possible interaction with a westerly trough, is expected to boost thunderstorm activity along the Peninsular West Coast, gradually spreading inland.

"Weather models indicate two back to back rainfall events to influence Peninsular India during the first fortnight of April. While there is time for the second event to firm up there is clarity on the first event. A combination of wind discontinuity and a potential interaction with westerly trough is likely to bring back thunderstorms. Starting from today places along the Peninsular West coast may see increased thunderstorm activity. These thunderstorms created by the seasonal wind discontinuity will gradually establish itself from now on," weather blogger Chennai Rains claims.
