Tamil Nadu Weather Update: Scattered Thundershowers Expected In Chennai Tonight, Parts Of State

Scattered thunderstorms are likely over the leeward areas of Tamil Nadu due to a developing upper air cyclonic circulation over the central Bay of Bengal, a weather blogger reported on Monday.

"Like Sunday, few places around Chennai and surrounding North Tamil Nadu may see late evening and night rains after another hot day," the blogger who gives weather report on his X account 'Chennai Rains' wrote.

As per Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai is predicted to get light to moderate rains."Sky condition is likely to be partly cloudy. Light / Moderate rain with thunderstorm and lightning is likely to occur in some areas during evening/night. Maximum temperature is likely to be 37-38°C and Minimum temperature is likely to be 27-28°C," the statement added.

During the 24-hour period ending at 08:30 IST on June 17, 2024, maximum temperatures were generally above normal to near normal across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and the Karaikal area. Vellore recorded the highest maximum temperature at 39.4°C the RMC stated.

Maximum temperatures ranged from 34-39°C over the plains of North Interior Tamil Nadu, 38-39°C over the plains of South Interior Tamil Nadu, 35-39°C over North Coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, 31-36°C over South Coastal Tamil Nadu, and 21-27°C in the hilly areas.

Chennai's Nungambakkam station recorded an above-normal maximum temperature of 38.8°C, which is 1.6°C above average. Meanwhile, the Meenambakkam station in Chennai recorded a normal maximum temperature of 38.7°C, which is 1.2°C above average.

Meanwhile, Virinjipuram in Vellore district recorded the highest rainfall with 7 cm. This was followed by Arani in Tiruvannamalai district and Marakkanam in Villupuram district, each receiving 6 cm of rainfall.
