Tamil Nadu Weather Update: Chennai Tops Rainfall Chart With 15 CMS, Yellow Alert Issued For 7 Dists

Several regions across Tamil Nadu experienced heavy rainfall on Monday, with Chennai's Manali zone (Zone 02 D15) recording a significant 15 cm of rainfall.

This was the highest in the state, followed by Avadi in Tiruvallur district, which received 11 cm. Jaya Engineering College in Tiruvallur, along with Maduravoyal and Vanagaram zones in Chennai, each saw 9 cm of rain. Other areas, including Valasaravakkam (Chennai), Ariyalur Taluk Office (Ariyalur), and ACS Medical College in Kancheepuram, received between 7 and 8 cm. Several places across Ariyalur, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, and Tiruvannamalai also recorded moderate rainfall, according to a statement from the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC).

Tamil Nadu Weather Update Manali Tops Rainfall Chart With 15 CMS Yellow Alert Issued For 7 Dists

The downpour was attributed to a low-pressure system that developed in the Westcentral Bay of Bengal, influenced by a cyclonic circulation over the Central Bay. The low-pressure area now lies over the north Andhra and south Odisha coasts, with adjoining areas also impacted.

Popular weather interpreter R. Pradeep John, from the Tamil Nadu Weatherman social media page, remarked on Monday's rain, saying, "That was one of the best days for KTCC (Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu) this season. Another widespread rain is expected tonight for North Tamil Nadu, including KTCC." He also predicted favorable conditions for rainfall in Vellore, Ranipet, Villupuram, Salem, Dharmapuri, Cuddalore, Pondicherry, and other areas. However, John noted that southern Tamil Nadu, including Madurai, would continue to experience hot weather.

More Rains Expected in Seven Districts

The RMC has issued a yellow alert for seven districts, warning of isolated heavy rainfall. The districts under alert include Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet, Tiruvallur, and Kancheepuram.

In Chennai, the weather is expected to remain partly cloudy, with possibilities of thunderstorms and light to moderate rain in some areas. Temperatures are predicted to hover between a maximum of 36-37°C during the day and a minimum of 26-27°C at night.

Heat Persists in Southern Tamil Nadu

While northern districts brace for more rains, southern Tamil Nadu continues to battle high temperatures. Madurai recorded the state's highest temperature at 40.5°C, followed by Karur, Nagapattinam, and Tiruchirappalli, each registering 39°C.

As the end of the month approaches, weather experts expect the formation of an upper air cyclonic circulation (UAC), which could bring easterlies and much-needed rain to the Kongu and southern districts of Tamil Nadu.
