Tamil Nadu Weather Update: 9 Districts Brace for Downpour, Light Rains Predicted In Chennai

Nine districts in Tamil Nadu are predicted to get heavy rains in the next 24 hours, the Regional Meteorological Department said on Sunday.

The RMC has issued a yellow alert for heavy rain for Kanyakumari, Nilgiris, Ghat areas of Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Theni, Dindigul, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi and Tirunelveli districts.

A few places are expected to get heavy rains on Monday as well.

As far as Chennai weather is concerned, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) forecasts partly cloudy skies for Chennai. Some areas may experience light rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. The maximum temperature is expected to range between 36-37°C, while the minimum temperature is likely to be between 27-28°C.

Many parts across the state have witnessed good rains in the last one week.

In the 24 hours ending at 08:30 IST on June 9, 2024, maximum temperatures across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal were generally below or near normal. The highest maximum temperature was recorded in Erode at 36.0°C.

Maximum temperatures ranged from:

32-36°C in the plains of Interior Tamil Nadu
33-35°C in North Coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal
30-34°C in South Coastal Tamil Nadu
21-25°C in the hilly areas

Chennai saw notably lower than usual maximum temperatures, with Meenambakkam recording 34.8°C (-3.2°C) and Nungambakkam at 34.0°C (-3.5°C).

According to data from the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Nalumukku in Tirunelveli district and Sholayar in Coimbatore district received 11 cm of rainfall. Valparai PAP in Coimbatore district and Oothu in Tirunelveli district each received 9 cm.

Following closely, Anaicut in Thanjavur district, Manalmedu in Mayiladuthurai district, Manalmedu ARG in Mayiladuthurai district, and Kakkachi in Tirunelveli district received 7 cm of rainfall.
