Tamil Nadu Weather Update: 17 Dists On Yellow Alert - Will It Rain In Chennai Today? Find Out
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued a yellow alert for 17 districts across Tamil Nadu for April 3 and 4, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and light to moderate rainfall. The alert covers major regions including the Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Madurai, Tirunelveli, and coastal districts like Thoothukudi and Ramanathapuram.
Rain Brings Respite from Heat
The state witnessed widespread showers on Wednesday, offering relief from soaring temperatures. Sivagiri (Tenkasi) recorded the highest rainfall at 11 cm, followed by Tondi (Ramanathapuram) and Tirumangalam (Madurai) at 9 cm each. Several other areas, including Madurai Airport and Virudhunagar, reported significant precipitation between 4-7 cm.

While maximum temperatures dipped 1-3°C below normal in parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, Erode recorded the highest daytime temperature of 37.6°C. In contrast, Karur Paramathi registered the coolest minimum temperature at 20.0°C in the plains.
Chennai Weather Outlook
The capital city is expected to experience thunderstorms and light rain today, with temperatures ranging between 26°C (min) and 33°C (max). The RMC forecasts near-normal temperatures for most regions, though hilly areas like Kodaikanal remain cooler, averaging 19-30°C.

Weather blogger R Pradeep John, who is known as Tamil Nadu Weatherman on social media, said in a post:After a unusual hot days in March, the nature has brought a perfect balancing rains. Today looks perfect too widespread across Tamil Nadu. Presently widespread rains are seen over Cuddalore belt which will move into interiors. Madurai and Karur got much needed respite from heavy rains."

According to his post, Chennai will witness a perfect cloudy day and predicted rains in southern part of the capital city. "There will be isolated spells here and there. A lucky day in April. West and Interior Tamil Nadu is going to have widespread. Krishnagiri, Tirupattur, Erode, Salem, Namakkal, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Nilgiris, Karur, Theni, Thenkasi, Thoothukudi, Ramanthapuram, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Kanyakumari, Nellai all will get rains. Bangalore is ideally placed for widespread rains and at locations heavy too," he added.
The blogger went on to claim that the temperature will on the lower side in the next two weeks "but will be humid due to increase in moisture."
