Tamil Nadu Weather Report: IMD Issues Red Alert For Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi
In view of the heavy downpours continuously over the last couple of days, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Tamil Nadu's Tenskasi, Thoothukudi, Tiruvaneli and Kanyakumari districts. The state is expected to see "heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy falls (above 204.4 mm) over South Tamil Nadu," the weather-monitoring agency said.
According to the weather department's daily bulletin "Heavy rain is likely to over Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Tenkasi districts of Tamilnadu on December 19." "Tamilnadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal are likely to witness light to moderate downpour during Dec 20 to Dec 24, 2023," said IMD on Monday.

The state authorities have also decided to keep schools and colleges shut till the situation gets better, according to the reports.

State Disaster Management Minister KKSSR Ramachandran told the media: "Various precautionary measures have been taken by the Tamil Nadu government. As a precautionary measure, 250 State Disaster Response Forces and National Disaster Response Forces have been deployed at Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thootukudi, and Tenkasi districts. 19 camps in Tirunelveli district, 4 camps in Kanyakumari district, 2 camps in Thoothukudi district, and 1 camp in Tenkasi district have been set up to accommodate the people during calamities. CM has directed us to be on the spot and take necessary measures to ensure people's safety"
Following the dangerous situation, Southern Railways canceled a large number of trains. Sharing a list of train services suspended or diverted, the railways said changes have been made in the train service schedule due to heavy rain and waterlogging in Tirunelveli Yard.
The Southern Railways added that services between the Tirunelveli-Tiruchendur section, Srivaikuntam, and Seydunganallur have been postponed or canceled following reports of tracks being damaged and waterlogging at railway tracks.
