Tamil Nadu Weather Report: Government Shuts Schools And Colleges In 4 Districts Due To Heavy Rain
Because of heavy rain across the state, the Tamil Nadu government on Sunday decided to shut schools and colleges for a day. The government has announced a holiday for December 18, Monday, in several districts including Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, and Tenkasi. According to the reports, the state is witnessing heavy downpours following a cyclonic circulation over the Indian Ocean and Southwest Bay of Bengal off the southern Sri Lanka coast.
Meanwhile, waterlogging was reported in many areas due to the heavy rain.

On Sunday, the Regional Meteorological Department (RMD) predicted light to moderate rain for South Tamil Nadu and North Tamil Nadu. The weather-monitoring department also warned people residing in Puducherry, and Karaikal that thunderstorms, lightning, and high-speed winds are likely to occur.
"Heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at one or two places over Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, and Thoothukudi districts of Tamilnadu. Heavy rain is likely to occur at one or two places over Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, Sivagangai districts of Tamilnadu and Karaikal area," RMS said in a statement.
Several flights have been canceled or diverted, and trains have been rescheduled or running late due to the bad weather.
Following the warning from the meteorological department, the Collectors of Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts have requested people to stay indoors and away from the Tamirabharani River as the water in the river is flowing above the danger level mark. To help people stuck due to heavy rain, authorities have deployed the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams in Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, and Kanniyakumari with rescue equipment.
Last week, Chennai and nearby districts witnessed heavy showers due to a cyclone.
