Tamil Nadu Weather: Rains In Chennai Today; 3 Districts On Yellow Alert

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has forecast a wet spell for several parts of Tamil Nadu, with one or two spells of light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning likely in some areas in Chennai on Monday.

While the weather activity is expected to be scattered, the RMC has issued a yellow alert for the Ghat areas of Tirunelveli district, as well as Tenkasi and Kanyakumari districts.

The forecast comes as the state experiences a noticeable shift in temperature patterns. The RMC, in its daily bulletin, highlighted a fall in maximum temperatures by 2 to 5 degrees Celsius at isolated places over Tamil Nadu during the past 24 hours. Despite this dip, maximum temperatures remain above normal by a similar margin at a few locations.

Erode recorded the highest maximum temperature in the state at 35.6°C, while the plains of Dharmapuri and Karur Paramathi saw the coolest nights, with a minimum temperature of 18.5°C.

The current weather activity is driven by two key systems. An upper-air cyclonic circulation lies over the Central Bay of Bengal, extending up to 3.1 km above mean sea level. Simultaneously, another upper-air system is situated over North Interior Tamil Nadu and its neighbourhood. These systems are contributing to the instability in the atmosphere, leading to the predicted rainfall.

Chennai Weather

The capital city, Chennai, is expected to see a relatively mild day with a maximum temperature of 32-33°C and a minimum of around 25°C.

Echoing the RMC's forecast, noted weather blogger R Pradeep John stated that southern Tamil Nadu, particularly Kanyakumari district, will continue to receive showers following yesterday's rains.

He said in a post, "South Tamil Nadu districts particularly Kumari district will continue to get rains after the yesterday rains. In the north TN a weak easterly wave will rains to KTCC (Chennai) later from today / tomorrow. While delta to Pondy coast will join the rains from tomorrow."

He further predicted that the KTCC (Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, Chennai, and Chengalpattu) is expected to get good rains on 18 and 19 November.
