Tamil Nadu Weather Alert: Rain Relief Short-Lived As Summer Returns In Chennai

The summer is not over in Chennai and suburbs despite getting good rains in the last one week.

Over the past few days, the westerlies have strengthened over Peninsular India due to the circulation currently over the Central Bay. This depression is expected to intensify into a cyclone within the next 24 hours. Weather models consistently indicate that the cyclone will head towards the Sundarbans delta, with a potential landfall around Sunday. Consequently, this northward-moving disturbance has brought back summer conditions to Chennai and the rest of North Coastal Tamil Nadu, an independent weather blogger who goes by 'Chennai Rains' on X, noted.

What the IMD Says?
In its daily bulletin, the RMC has predicted partly cloudy skies. The maximum temperature is expected to be between 39-40°C, while the minimum temperature will likely range from 29-30°C in the next 48 hours.

The weather agency has not mentioned that it is going to rain today or tomorrow.

However, the RMC has issued an yellow alert, indicating heavy rains over Tenkasi, , Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts. However, light to moderate rains are expected to occur at on or two places in the next five days.

During the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 pm today, maximum temperatures were generally below normal across most locations in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. The highest temperature recorded was 39.5°C at Chennai Airport.

Chennai Weather Summer Returns

Maximum temperatures ranged from 28-39°C over the plains of North Interior Tamil Nadu and 34-36°C over the plains of South Interior Tamil Nadu. Coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal recorded temperatures between 31°C and 39°C, while hilly areas registered temperatures from 17°C to 24°C. In Chennai, maximum temperatures were close to normal, with MBK recording 39.5°C (+0.4°C) and NBK recording 37.9°C (-0.3°C).

As far as the rainfall is concerned, Mylaudy in Kanniyakumari district received the highest rainfall with 10 cm on Friday. This was followed by 9 cm in Mambzhathuraiyaru (Kanniyakumari district), and 8 cm each in Anaikedanku, Balamore, Thuckalay (all in Kanniyakumari district), and Periyar (Theni district).

Additionally, Kottaram (Kanniyakumari district), Nalumukku (Tirunelveli district), Nagercoil (Kanniyakumari district), Perunchani Dam (Kanniyakumari district), Oothu (Tirunelveli district), Puthan Dam (Kanniyakumari district), and Suralacode (Kanniyakumari district) received 7 cm of rainfall.
