Tamil Nadu Weather Alert: 9 Districts Above 40°C; Rain to Rescue Chennai & 7 Districts

Several districts in Tamil Nadu recorded over 40°C on Sunday with Karur registering the highest temperature at 43.8°C. The good news is six districts which had been affected by the heat, will get relief as heavy rains are predicted on Tuesday.

In the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 today, maximum temperatures across Tamil Nadu were generally above normal, with many places in the plains of interior Tamil Nadu experiencing appreciably high temperatures.

Isolated pockets in the north interior of Tamil Nadu saw markedly high temperatures, while coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal experienced normal to above-normal temperatures. Heatwave conditions persisted in a few pockets in the north interior of Tamil Nadu, the Regional Meteorological Department (RMD) said in a statement.

Nine districts registered over 40°C on Sunday. The highest maximum temperature was recorded at Karur Paramathi, reaching 43.8°C (+7.5°C), followed by Erode at 43.4°C (+5.9°C), Tirupattur at 42.2°C (+5.0°C), Vellore at 42.1°C (+3.1°C), Madurai_AP at 41.8°C (+4.2°C), Tiruchirappalli_AP at 41.7°C (+3.6°C), Tiruthani at 41.7°C (+1.8°C), Salem at 41.0°C (+3.8°C), and Palayamkottai at 41.0°C (+3.6°C).

The plains of the remaining interior of Tamil Nadu recorded temperatures between 38°C to 40°C. Coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal registered temperatures ranging from 36°C to 38°C, while hilly areas experienced temperatures between 24°C to 26°C.

Chennai recorded normal maximum temperatures with Meenambakkam at 39.4°C (+1.8°C) and Nungambakkam at 37.0°C (+0.6°C).

RMD reports that heatwave conditions are expected to persist at isolated pockets in North Interior Tamil Nadu.

Rain Alert

The RMD predicts heavy rainfall is expected at isolated locations across Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Erode, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Salem, and Tirupattur districts.

According to RMD, Chennai can expect partly cloudy skies with the possibility of light to moderate rainfall in certain areas today and tomorrow. The maximum temperature is expected to range between 38-39°C, while the minimum temperature is likely to be around 29-30°C.
