Tamil Nadu Weather Alert: 12 Dist Today, 21 Dists Tomorrow To Get Heavy Rains

Heavy rains are expected to lash parts of Tamil Nadu for the next three days, according to a statement from the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) on Wednesday.

The weather agency issued a yellow alert for 12 districts, including Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukottai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Ariyalur, Perambalur, and Villupuram, along with Puducherry and Karaikal, forecasting heavy rainfall in these areas today.

On Thursday, heavy rains are expected to expand across 21 districts, including Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Kallakurichi, Tiruvannamalai, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukkottai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Villupuram, Sivaganga, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari, in addition to Puducherry and Karaikal.

By Friday, 18 districts are anticipated to experience continued heavy rainfall, including Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukkottai, Dindigul, Theni, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Nilgiris, Coimbatore, and Tiruppur, as well as Karaikal.

The RMC also noted that Madurai_AP recorded the highest temperature on Wednesday at 36.8°C, while Erode registered the lowest at 18.4°C.

The weather agency explained that a low-pressure area over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal, near the north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts, has weakened. However, an associated upper-air cyclonic circulation persists over the southwest Bay of Bengal, extending up to 0.9 km above sea level. Another cyclonic circulation in the southeast Arabian Sea off Kerala's coast is present between 1.5 and 3.1 km above sea level.

In Chennai, moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning is anticipated in some areas today.

Heavy rainfall has already been recorded in the region, with Sirkali and Kollidam in Mayiladuthurai district receiving the highest at 14 cm each on Tuesday, followed by Puducherry at 12 cm. Other areas, including Manalmedu and Jayamkondam, received between 8 and 11 cm of rainfall, highlighting the widespread impact of this prolonged rain spell.
