Tamil Nadu Train Attack on Migrant Worker: Four Juveniles Detained After Viral Video Sparks Political Row
A migrant worker from Maharashtra is recovering in Thiruvallur Government Hospital after an assault on a suburban train near Chennai. Tamil Nadu Police detained four 17-year-olds, after video of the attack, filmed inside the coach heading to Thiruthani, spread widely on social media and triggered strong reactions from political leaders.
The clips show the group surrounding the worker, harassing and attacking with machetes while other passengers look on. In one video, an accused later appears in an Instagram reel, waving a machete to a Tamil song. The victim is seen bleeding heavily after the blows, and doctors continue to monitor the condition.

Tamil Nadu migrant worker assault prompts arrests
Police said all four accused are 17 years old and were picked up soon after the footage surfaced. Three were sent to a juvenile home in Chengalpattu. The fourth was granted bail by the court, which noted the continuation of studies. Officials added that the assault happened on a train travelling from Chennai towards Thiruthani.
Investigators stated that the youths allegedly targeted the migrant worker inside the moving train and recorded the violence on mobile phones. Another clip shows the group striking the victim with machetes at close range. Officers are examining the videos and phones, while railway police and local units are coordinating further checks along the route.
Tamil Nadu migrant worker assault sparks political clash
The incident quickly moved into the political space, with Sivaganga MP Karti Chidambaram demanding visible policing across Tamil Nadu. "I reiterate my earlier demand. Time has come for the Tamil Nadu police to prove its mettle. A statewide "Show of Force" operation is needed immediately. Massive checking of all vehicles plying the roads & identity checks must be done. All history sheeters must be required to report to the nearest police station thrice a week," Chidambaram, from Congress, posted on X. Congress is an ally of the ruling DMK.
Opposition parties linked the assault to what they describe as a growing drug problem in the state, ahead of assembly elections due next year. AIADMK leader Kovai Sathyan said, "DMK's Dravidian model achievement. When drugs get into the hands of juveniles, this is what happens. Tamil Nadu is the new Amsterdam and narcotic state of India. These boys should not be treated as juveniles; they should be treated as adults."
DMK leader TKS Elangovan rejected the wider charges and defended the government's record on law and order. Calling it an isolated case, Elangovan said, "When the incident came to light, the police immediately took action. Thousands of migrant labourers across Tamil Nadu feel safe in the state," stressing that migrant workers continue to be employed across sectors.
The case remains under investigation, with focus on how the teenagers accessed weapons and chose the victim. The assault on the migrant worker has renewed debate in Tamil Nadu about drug use, youth violence, policing levels and the safety of out-of-state labourers, even as the government and opposition trade accusations.
